Zotero connectors differences?

edited October 15, 2017
Is there any differences between Zotero connector for Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari as far as possibilities are concerned? Which is the most advanced? And should we regulary check for connector updates? Many thanks.
  • They are the same under the hood; main differences are user-interface. Opera is less actively monitored/maintained, so if something there breaks it may stay broken longer.
As for most browser extensions, you should have automatic updating enabled.
  • But I see that only recently Chrome onnector get features which Firefox had long time ago ("The Zotero Connector for Chrome now includes functionality that was previously available only in Zotero for Firefox).

So now all connectors for all browsers are the same? Same possibilities? Many thanks.
  • What used to be "Zotero for Firefox" no longer exists in Zotero 5. Now the Zotero Connectors for all browser are the same, yes.
  • A few more points:

    1) The Opera extension is currently a very old version.

    2) The Safari extension has fewer features due to limitations in the Safari extension framework (though some additional proxy-related functionality is coming soon).

    3) The Safari extension doesn't update automatically and needs to be updated from the Extensions pane of the Safari preferences. Everything else auto-updates.

    4) The Firefox and Chrome extensions should be more or less identical.

Do the Chrome and Firefox extensions can be used at the same time or this may create conflicts?

So there is a lots of differences, there are not all the same! Very important information. Im not talking about Zotero for Firefox but about connectors for Firefox as a said in a title. Maybe you should make a table and compare connectors for different browsers? So people can choose? For example, using Opera and Opera connector is now not a smart choice as @dstillman describet. Good question @tritemio . Many thanks and keep up the excellent work.

They can be used at the same time.
  • Hi,

Is there any update regarding the availability of proxy-related functionality for Safari?

    Many thanks, best,
    Frédérique
  • The proxy feature is available in Safari, although you either need to manually enter the initial proxy entry with the scheme, or log in into your proxy with Zotero and Chrome/Firefox with Zotero Connector installed first, which will then transfer the proxy entry into Safari after restart. Note that unfortunately with macOS Mojave and Safari 12, Apple is deprecating the extension framework that Zotero Connector is built with, so there won't be a lot of time to enjoy this feature.
