There is no Z

It shows in my add-ons, but there is no Z.

I have installed this at work with no problem, but it won't work at home.

Also, I have read through everything written in these forums about these kinds of issues and tried everything possible. And surfed endlessly all to dead-ends.

I am thinking that there are a sufficient number of issues expressed that the developer ought to devote some honest work to producing a flawless "installable package".

Don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful package and I have done some lovely things with it at work. But, the fact is, your developer is not giving sufficient attention to these constantly recurring installation issues.

And, yes, of course I can see me status bar. And, no, these are no other add ons.
  • Sorry to hear you're having trouble, but there's nothing for us to fix here. Zotero is just a regular Firefox extension, so there's no "installable package" to create other than the standard XPI we already provide. Installation problems are generally due to either Firefox profile corruption or conflicts with other add-ons and have nothing to do with Zotero itself.

I assume you've read the No Status Bar Icon page. Have you tried the "Corrupt extension files" steps (or any of the other troubleshooting steps from the Mozilla site)? Have you tried installing Zotero into a new Firefox profile?

Also, do you see Zotero listed under Tools?
  • What do you mean by a "new Firefox profile"?

I am willing to explore this, but I am thinking you are not hearing me. There are zillions of pieces of software being installing annually and flawlessly. But your response suggests that the constantly recurring issues with Zotero installation must be due to external factors.
  • You wrote "Also, do you see Zotero listed under Tools? "

    Yes, of course.
  • What do you mean by a "new Firefox profile"?
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+Profiles

Create a new profile, install Zotero into it, and see if you still have the problem. If not, it suggests that there's a problem in your original profile.

This wouldn't necessarily mean that you'd have to switch to the new profile and transfer your data over—it's just a troubleshooting step to isolate the problem. If you haven't tried the "Corrupt extension files" steps in your old profile yet, that'd certainly be the first thing to do.
I am willing to explore this, but I am thinking you are not hearing me.
No, I'm telling you that your premise (that there are installation bugs in Zotero) is wrong.
your response suggests that the constantly recurring issues with Zotero installation must be due to external factors.
Yes. Because they're generally due to corrupt Firefox extension files or conflicting add-ons. We can't fix a problem in Zotero if the problem isn't in Zotero to begin with.

We also have no reason to believe these problems are common relative to the number of people for whom Zotero installs flawlessly.
You wrote "Also, do you see Zotero listed under Tools? "

    Yes, of course.
As in, a menu option under Tools, or in Tools->Add-ons? I was referring to the former. If you do see a Zotero menu option under Tools, what happens when you select it?
  • OK. So I went thru the steps to create a new firefox profile under Win Vista. When it restarts firefox, zotero installs just fine.

Then, when I close firefox and re-open, it goes back to the original profile.

And when I go through the New Profile routine again, the one I just created doesn't show.

I don't see any place in firefox to give me a choice of profiles, although Win Explorer says I now have several.
  • When you start Firefox with the Profile Manager, do you not see multiple profiles in the list? For the moment, you might want to uncheck "Don't ask at startup", after which you'll see the profile manager when you start Firefox normally. (When you're done troubleshooting, you can delete the other profiles and turn that back on.)

But you appear to be saying that Zotero installed fine in the other profiles. So, as I said above, there's a problem with your original Firefox profile that has nothing to do with Zotero. You haven't yet answered, but I assume by now you've tried the "Corrupt extension files" steps? If those don't work, you may want to just move your data to the new profile.
  • Yes. I unchecked the "Don't ask", but it still doesn't ask, and goes right back to my original profile.

Z works fine for me at work, and I'm doing great things with it.

At home, I'm not inclined to spend more than a few evenings with it. So I am done.
  • OK, well, since the problems you're having are with Firefox, you might consider just moving the entire Firefox data directory, which is the directory containing Profiles and profiles.ini, out of the way. Firefox should create a new data directory and a single new profile, and if it worked you could move your bookmarks and other files back in.
