The icon is in the toolbar, not in the address bar and when I click it it only gives me the option to save the details of the page, not the item itself. I was working in proquest but went to NYTimes to see if that made a difference and it still didn't work

It seems I had a similar problem. However, as I was writing this post and testing various solutions to be able to provide better information, it rather mystically disappeared. Not sure what fixed it - I did update my Safari connector, but previously I also had the problem in Chrome and Firefox.
For whatever it's worth, I'm still posting the description of the problem here, in case it helps either others experiencing the problem, the developers, or in the writing of the documentation... Again, I'm not sure what made it start working all of sudden.
Description of problem (again, this does now work, though it didn't this morning...):
I used to be able to do searches in ProQuest Historical Newspapers and save references just like from e.g. JSTOR. Both saving from the search results page (i.e., saving multiple ones by checking the checkboxes of references) and saving from the page of the individual newspaper article worked, if I recall correctly. Now neither works; instead of saving the referenced newspaper articles, Zotero only offers the option of saving the web page itself as a snapshot.
I'm not sure when this has changed as it was a couple of years ago that I did this the last time, I think. At the time, I was using Firefox and the Zotero plugin; now I'm using standalone plus Safari. I have tried with the Firefox plugin too and it doesn't work either.
To replicate:
Do a search in ProQuest Historical Newspapers using a library-linked account, try to save references to Zotero. The Zotero icon in the toolbar was neither the one for an individual citation nor the folder one for multiple citations but rather the website snapshot icon.
In Chrome and Firefox at least, copy-pasting the part of the URL for the individual article that does not include the university- or library-linked account id and so on results in Zotero recognizing the item and correctly saving it.
In Safari, things started working after re-installing the Safari connector (though I'm not positive that that's where the problem was). But at the same time, I also saw that Firefox suddenly turned up the folder icon for the search results.
Anyway, I don't require any action on this, just thought I'd post these confused musings for the record...
