Zotero Standalone doesn't save source when using VPN client

Hey,

I'm using my university's Cisco VPN Client with the Zotero Standalone 5.0.17. My proxy settings are set to automatic recognition. I can see the Zotero plug-in icon, however when I click on it nothing happens. If I turn off automatic recognition and click on the icon a download window appears with just the headline but the source doesn't end up in my library.
I've tried turning off my Avira and my StandsApp (AdBlocker) but that doesn't help either.

Here is an example of an URL that doesn't work: http://www.jstor.org/stable/25063556?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents

I would really appreciate some help!

Btw I've only had this problem recently after having to wipe and set up my laptop again.

Thanks in advance,
Lea
  • Can you submit a Debug log ID (in the Help menu) for an attempt to use the connector button while under VPN?
  • You'll want to exclude 127.0.0.1 from being proxied by the VPN.
  • Thanks guys!

    1. That's what I get in the Debug output: (3)(+0000000): WebSocket error

    (1)(+0000005): WebSocket connection closed: 1006

    (3)(+0000002): Delaying 5000 ms

(3)(+0005017): Connecting to streaming server at wss://stream.zotero.org/

    Is that what you meant?

    2. Yes, I haven't tried that. How do I exclude it?
  • We'd want a Debug ID from the connector for the save attempt, not from Zotero. But we probably don't really need that, because the issue here is just going to be your VPN interfering with the connector's requests to 127.0.0.1. How you exclude that depends on your VPN software, so you'll need to figure that out on your own or ask your university IT department for help. See https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/connector_zotero_unavailable for more info on how to test the connection from the browser.
  • Hello,
I am using the standalone Zotero and since then I have problems saving literature when using VPN (in order to get publications via the university account) Tunnelblick. When using the old version with the plug-in, it was never a problem and even pdf could be downloaded.
Now, although loved, zotero is getting usless because i have to disconnect vpn in order to save the literature.

    What to do you suggest?
Any solutions apart from switching the program :-)
Can a apply changes in order to use Zotero again?

    Thans for your help!!

    Best regards Thomas

The message in zotero :" this item could not be saved because Zotero is not open or is unreachable. Please open Zotero and try again."
