Word add-in won't allow similar papers in the same citation...

I'm using the Word add-in and I have 2 similar papers by the same authors that it won't allow me to put in the same citation. These papers are Part I and Part II, and have similar but slightly different titles. The authors are the same, but author order is different. Is there any way around this other than making 2 separate citations?
  • Can you explain exactly what is happening specifically? The Word plugin wouldn’t preventing you from inserting these so long as they are actually 2 separate items in your Zotero library.
  • They are separate items in my library, and I can add each one individually in separate citations, but I cannot add them both in the same citation.

    Here's what I currently have:

"Disease can regulate free-ranging populations of animals (May and Anderson 1978)(Anderson and May 1978)."

I would like to have them both in the same field so that I don't have to write 2 sentences here.

What do you mean “cannot add them both in the same citation”? What happens when you try? How are you trying to insert them both in the same citation?
  • The titles are:

Regulation and Stability of Host-Parasite Population Interactions: I. Regulatory Processes

Regulation and Stability of Host-Parasite Population Interactions: II. Destabilizing Processes
  • When I click the "add new citation" button I can type and bring them both up. When I click on 1 and add it (I can't highlight both and add them both at the same time) and then go to add the second one it's nowhere to be found in the drop-down menu.
  • Zotero doesn’t pay any attention to the item content similarly when showing you items in the search results in the Word processor plugin. Try entering the full text of the second title or searching by the authors (Also Type a space after the last word of your search). You can also try to insert the first citation, then click the Edit Citation button on that citation, and add the second item.
  • I already tried each of those. That's why I'm confused. I'm wondering if it's something in how they search the library. If they check just the first few words and say "yup, that's the same, move on", basically thinking it's a duplicate.
  • So I noticed that both Abstracts had a (1) as the first character. I deleted that on both of them and now they work. I don't know if that solved it or if it triggered something else that did, but it's working now. This is weird. I appreciate the help, by the way.
  • Zotero will show results for similar items, even identical duplicate items. I’m not sure why it wasn’t working before, but glad it’s working now.
