Help! Document lost zotero links

I have been working in a word doc with a linked zotero library and many references included. I saved the document elsewhere and it saved as an open text doc. When I have returned to work on it the links to zotero seem to be lost, so when I add a reference, the numbering starts again from 1, as if creating the first inserted reference. How do I relink the library so i can add additional references to the doc in order?
  • If current citations are in plain text (not field or bookmarks) and you have no backup of your document then you have to add all citation again. Sorry. I do not know any way to say Zotero how correctly linked the plain text to items in Zotero database.
  • Saving a Word doc using Zotero with the citations stored as “Fields” (the default) as an ODT will break the citations, as ODT does not support Word fields. Your only recourse at this point would be to open an older version of your document that you saved as .doc/.docx and copy-paste the citations out of there.

In the future, always save your documents as .docx. If you must have them in ODT to share with a colleague, then, in the Zotero Document Preferences, you need to choose the “Bookmarks” option. Note that this is discouraged for general use, as Bookmarks are more fragile than Fields and are prone to accidentally being broken/corrupted.
