Can't find zotero.sqlite after 5.0 update

  • Hi everyone,
I am also using Zotero on a Windows 10 machine, I just ran today the update to ZoteroStandalone v5 and get an error message. Zotero can not find my database zotero.sqlite . The default storage folder seems to be now C:\Users\MyName\Zotero and not "C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Zotero\Zotero\Profiles\fukkl568.default" anymore...
But on Firefox version I dont have this problem. The database seems ok.

Thanks in advance for your help
  • What's the exact message you're receiving?

The 5.0 update does migrate your data directory from your Zotero profile directory (within AppData) to the home directory, but you shouldn't get an error. There shouldn't be a C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Zotero\Zotero\Profiles\fukkl568.default\zotero after the update, only a C:\Users\MyName\Zotero.

There's no longer a Firefox version that accesses the database, only the Zotero Connector for Firefox, which you should make sure you install.
  • Thank you very much,

I installed the Zotero connector for Firefox
The message in Zotero StandAlone (or Zotero 5) is "You are going to sync your Opus account to an empty zotero database. If your data are somewhere else on this machine, change the directory" (approx translation from french).
I have a 888ko zotero.sqlite file in C:\Users\Charles\Zotero and a 106MO zotero.sqlite file in "C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Zotero\Zotero\Profiles\fukkl568.default"... I still have this directory and the files (which I did back up).

Should I manually copy paste the big .sqlite file to the new directory ?

    Thank you in advance
(sorry almost midnight here in Paris)
  • Hmm, and this happened just after installing 5.0? It performed the migration and then left you with an empty database?

What about the 'storage' subdirectory? Do you see files in the profile directory and no files in the home directory one?
  • Thanks D. Stillman,

    1) Yes this happend just after installing 5.0. It began to install and migrate (I am not 100% sure because I was not totally checking the installation process...working on some other stuff).
Then the error message was displayed.
I have to admit that Firefox was running during the installation (I discovered after, reading the forum and manuals, that FF should be closed while taking care of Zotero folders)

    2) I see the Storage directory in the Profile Directory (1538 files). I dont see any 'Storage' Directory in the Home Directory...only Locate, Styles, Translators folders.

  • OK, then the easiest thing would just be to 1) make sure you've installed the Zotero Connector, 2) close Zotero, 3), move 'Zotero' in your home directory out of the way, and 4) move 'zotero' from the profile directory to your home directory as 'Zotero'. Zotero 5.0 should automatically use the moved Zotero directory.
  • It worked perfectly, thank you very much !
I hope this could help other users.

Thanks again for Zotero this is a very useful tool for many of us.
