Zotero creating temp files

Zotero is creating 444kb temp files in my temp directory every few seconds. It fills up my harddrive very quickly. I've opened the files (named ####.tmp) and found ascii information indicating that it appears to be SQL data for Zotero (it indicates that it may be from the Word integration aspect). I've upgraded to the latest version (5.0.4) but this hasn't changed the behaviour. How can I make this stop?

Thank you,
Stefanie Ruel
  • Does it do it all the time or only with certain actions (e.g., when Word is open)? Can you submit a Debug ID (https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output) of when it is making some temp files?
  • I've submitted with the debug id D1173575977.

This happens all the time, whether Zotero or Word is running or not. Is there a way to upload a copy of the .tmp file for your inspection?
  • That Debug ID shows Zotero startup, and nothing after that. Does this only happen during startup, or after as well? If the latter, we'd want a Debug ID just for a period after startup (i.e., give Zotero a minute to settle, stop syncing, etc.) when this is occurring.

You can email a .tmp file to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread.
  • Hello, did this get fixed? I just updated to Zotero 5.0.29 and when I start it up, it seems to generate about 40 zip files per minute, for 1-3 minutes, then stops. They are location in my Zotero folder, in a folder labelled "tmp," which is why I ask here.

@saswain: That just sounds like file syncing. You're at your file sync quota, and Zotero is trying to upload files. A future version will do a better job of backing off automatically, but if you're not interested in a storage subscription you should just disable file syncing from the Sync pane of the Zotero preferences.
  • Hmm, thanks for the response @dstillman. It has never happened before, so I had a slight moment of panic as to where the files were all appearing from. I just turned off sync and quit Zotero, and they disappeared. I have reopened and no zip files have reappeared, so you must be right. Thank you!
