Some added parenthetical citations do not show up in bibliography in Word

Greetings. I'm having trouble with a word document in which most of the citations are correctly showing up in the references list at the end of the word document, but some are not.

I am using a brand new MacBook Pro with Word for Mac. Zotero version 4.0.29.15

I have tried everything suggested per this earlier discussion: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/31086/items-not-showing-up-in-word-bibliography

I have deleted the suspect references and added them again. I have added them into another location in the document. I have tried changing to a different style and back again. I have pressed the "Zotero Bibliographic Management: Refresh" button until I'm blue in the face. I have opened and closed the document and done all those things again. I've had a collaborator on a different machine try all those things as well.

Then I tried copy and pasting everything over into a NEW word document. Still the offending citations did not show up. I then repeated all the shenanigans above. STILL NOTHING. I'm going a little crazy here.

Suggestions very welcome. I'm a new convert to Zotero from EndNote, but this is really undermining my confidence that by adding in the Zotero references, I can trust that the references list will be complete.
  • Find one of the citations that isn't working. Right-click on it and click Toggle Field Codes. In the big block of code that shows up, does it say "Zotero" anywhere near the beginning?
  • Okay, this is hugely hugely embarrassing, but I eventually figured out what went wrong. I will own up to my idiocy in public in case it helps any future EndNote converts. In EN the bibliography is automatically generated whenever you place a citation into the document. I was working with a document that had started in EndNote, and then I went through and replaced all the EN citations with Zotero citations. But what I didnt realize is that in Zotero you have to manually go into some spot in the document and click to say "this is where I want the references list to appear!"

What made this confusing was that there WAS a references list at the end of the document. In fact, when I chose different styles with Zotero that list would change and be formatted differently. But what tipped me off was that when I selected "edit bibliography" it told me there was no zotero bibliography. I pressed to add one and viola! full references including the previously missing citations.
  • No idiocy at all. It can sometimes be confusing switching programs, particularly if both use the same system to interface with Word. It's not an uncommon problem to miss converting a few citations ir the bibliography.
