Zotero stopped downloading PDF after traslators update

After updating the translators in the Chrome Zotero Connector, Zotero stopped to download PDF from pages.

E.g. I am unable to download PDF from JSTOR (link: http://www.jstor.org/stable/2109594?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents)

and ScienceDirect (link: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0094119004000385)

In the first case, Zotero tries to download the PDF, as showed in the popup, but after some time it puts a red cross on the left of the PDF file, indicating that the download failed

In the second case, Zotero does not try at all to download a PDF file

No further error messages are provided

Before the update of the translators, I was able to download from both JSTOR and ScienceDirect, although I did not try these 2 particular articles

    In both examples that are not free available documents, and probably you have no permission to download it. Can you download it manually?

    In both cases, I can actually download the PDFs from the web browser. I am connected to the web from my university, which has bought a subscription to the journals, and the journals recognize the IP address

    I previously downloaded plenty of PDFs which I think are not free and I would not be able to download outside my university network, also from ScienceDirect

    For example I previously successfully downloaded this: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0167718704001080
  • I can replicate ScienceDirect. That's been a bit of a moving target, they keep changing small things. We haven't changed the translator, so it has nothing to do with that.

    JSTOR -- you need to accept their conditions of use by downloading a PDF manually once per session.
  • On JSTOR you might be right, I tried to download the PDF from the web browser and it didn't ask to accept the conditions, so I deduce I already did. Then I tried with Zotero and it downloaded the PDF. I think you can issue a pop up saying what you told in your comment if the download file

    Glad to be of help for ScienceDirect :)
  • @raffairon -- could you check the Sciencedirect issue again. This is working for me now on all setups I can test (without any changes on the Zotero side)
  • yes it downloads the PDF if I am connected through the proxy of the university. Otherwise I would not have access to the article of course

    So positive: it's working

    That's strange
  • Here is another PDF that Zotero is unable to download. In this case it is SAGE journals:

    http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/014920630102700609
  • Works for me. Do you get the red x or no sign of download attempt?
  • I got and still get the red cross :(
  • are you on campus or going through a proxy to access the article (i.e. is the above URL exactly what you see or did you remove some part inserted by your library)

    The above URL is exactly what I see

    I am not on campus but I am connected through the university proxy server. The proxy is configured automatically using a PAC file provided by the university. I use Google Chrome, while the SwitchyOmega extension manages the proxy configuration. Of course I am able to download the PDF manually (fortunately ZotFile recognizes the download and asks to add it automatically!)
  • yeah, that's almost certainly related to the proxy configuration. Works fine for me from Chrome.
    Do other paywalled PDFs import correctly for you?
  • I dont know

    ScienceDirect seems to work, while IEEE Explore doesn't work (e.g. this http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/610040/ doesn't work). I am talking about Zotero automatic download, I am able to manually download the PDF from both of them
  • Here is the relevant part from the PAC file. They are all similar, so it's strange hat ScienceDirect works, for example (but I am pretty sure that JSTOR works too)

    if (shExpMatch(url, "http://*.sciencedirect.com/*")) { return "PROXY proxy.polimi.it:8080"; }

    if (shExpMatch(url, "http://*.ieee.org*")) { return "PROXY proxy.polimi.it:8080"; }

    if (shExpMatch(url, "http://*.sagepub.com/*")) { return "PROXY proxy.polimi.it:8080"; }
  • @danstillman PAC proxy configuration is kind of beyond me -- any ideas of how to troubleshoot this? (provided it's actually due to the proxy, but seems highly likely).
  • Is there no error log? I mean, when I get the red cross, does it tell somewhere what exactly got wrong?
  • We'd need to see a Debug ID from both the Chrome extension and Zotero for a save attempt.
  • For the connector is D1124175322
    For the standalone is D186610158

    I have tried to download this: http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/014920630102700609
    and got the red cross

    Thanks
  • Beginning translation with Better BibLaTeX
    This may be unrelated, but start by disabling BBT, make sure the translators it installs are removed, and then generate another Debug ID from Zotero.
  • I disabled BBL, I am not sure what you mean by "make sure the translators it installs are removed" or where I find that concept in the documentation

    For the connector is D599753558

    For Zotero is D674895677
