Need help editing Journal of Science style

Hi All,

The American Journal of Science was created (apparently) using "and others" in in-line citations/references instead of et al. Could someone please help me edit the file so it does "et al." in in-line citations?

Thanks
  • Is this a general problem with the style that should be fixed for everyone, or just a personal customization you would like for your own use? If the former, could you post a link to the current journal style guide calling for "et al." and we will fix the official style.

If the latter, open the .csl file and search for "and others". Replace this term with "et-al". General style editing instructions here: https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step

    Hi bwiernik,

Thank you for the quick reply. According to Science, in-line citations must be numbered and et al. is used for 5 authors or more.

    See below:

"For journal articles, list initials first for all authors, separated by a space: A. B. Opus, B. C. Hobbs. Do not use "and." Use et al. (italics) for more than five authors. Titles of cited articles can now be included, with words in lower case except for proper nouns, followed by a period (see samples). Journal titles are in italics; volume numbers follow, in boldface. Do not place a comma before the volume number or before any parentheses. You may give the full inclusive pages of the article. Journal years are in parentheses: (1996). End each listing with a period. Do not use ibid. or op. cit. (these cannot be linked online)."

I believe this should be fixed for everyone. Would you be able to fix the style to match the above description?

    Thank you so much.

That's very different from the current style, so it seems like the guidelines have changed substantially since the style was written. Can you post a link to the journal guidelines and we will update the style?

@damnation You worked on this one a while back.

    "Science":
    https://www.zotero.org/styles?q=id:science&dependent=0
and the "American Journal of Science"
    https://www.zotero.org/styles?q=id:american-journal-of-science&dependent=0
are two different journals with entirely different citation styles.

(and "and others" in in-text citations is correct for the latter)
  • bwiernik and adamsmith,

Thank you for your help. bwiernik, adamsmith has posted the style I need (first link). I searched the style repository for "Science" but it did not show up. adamsmith, thank you for the link. It is my mistake I misconstrued "science" and "american journal of science" with respect to the repository.

Thank you for all your help.
  • (It does show up when searching for science, just very far down the list because it starts with S)
