Cannot save item from google scholar and retrieve metadata of attachments due to the use of IPv6!

OS: macOS 10.12.5
zotero version: both 4.0.29 and 5.0 beta.
Bug ID: 761910704

I'm sure this problem is caused by IPv6.
I used to use google scholar through vps(Virtual private server), however, recently google gives me warnings a'b and doesn't let me access the google scholar. As a result, I had to enble the IPv6 configuration of my vps. Then the issue came out.

Hope the problem could soon been solved.
  • I'm not sure why you think this has to do with IPv6. The "Retrieve Metadata from PDF" makes automated requests against Google Scholar — if you make too many, you'll get temporarily blocked. Changing IP addresses would temporarily fix that.

(We hope to reduce our reliance on Google Scholar for that feature in the future.)
  • Thank you for replying. My thought is due to an experiement with almost just one variable being changed which is whether enabling IPv6 or not.

The detail is that I attempt to retrieve metadata just from one file and I try to save just one item from google scholar and these actions couldn't been done. So from my point of view, this is not related to the amount of items zotero dealing with.

The Zotero client obviously doesn't know or care whether your WAN address is IPv6, so the issue is almost certainly just whether Google blocks you, and that's going to be up to them. If you can't access Google Scholar, the Retrieve Metadata function won't work for files that can't be identified by DOI or ISBN.

If you provide a Debug ID for an attempt that fails, we can take a look, but it's likely the only thing we'll be able to tell you is that Google is blocking you.
  • @dstillman Sorry, I didn't state the problem clearly. I use IPv6 just in order to overcome the block from google which means after that I can access any information from goolge or other sources at least through web browsers.

    The debug ID is 284245569.

Thank you for your effort. If you can't find any problem, then just let it be. I will find some substitutions.

That's a Report ID, not a Debug ID, but here's the error:
[JavaScript Error: "BibTeX not found. Got page with title "Sorry..."" {file: "Google Scholar" line: 570}]
So you're getting an error from Google. There's really nothing we can do about that (other than reduce the reliance on Google Scholar in the future).
  • @dstillman Thank you for your patience!
