Error 596840913

Here is my previous thread:
http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/6206/error-1609232755/#Item_1

I followed directions given in that thread. Also followed all directions on this page, including submitting my database to be rebuilt.
http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues

I still cannot save journal references. Here are three examples that I CANNOT save:

http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=3310960&fulltextType=RA&fileId=S0305741008001100

http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~content=a783424873~db=all~order=page

I can, however, save book references. Here are two examples that I CAN save:

http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/227031702

http://catalog.library.ucla.edu/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?v1=2&ti=1,2&Search_Arg=asia%27s%20next%20giant&Search_Code=TAL2&SL=None&CNT=50&PID=-_9DOkhXQlWrxTtDNClCh3PQ&SEQ=20090322180344&SID=6

Any help would be much appreciated. I have invested a lot of time in this database, and I do not want to abandon it.

Thanks!
Greg

Edit: Using FF 3.0.7 and Zotero 1.0.9
  • There's no need to create a new thread when you already have one open.

As I said on that thread, you have an extension conflict, and the error reports for the URLs you provided indicate that you still had many other extensions installed. Please follow the steps in Step 5 of the translator troubleshooting steps, disabling all other extensions, and post URLs that are still failing.
  • Thanks for your reply, Dan.

Sorry to create the new thread. I was just following the last instruction on the "troubleshooting translator issues page".

I completely followed all of the steps on that page again, and this time, after I disabled all extensions except for zotero, I did not re-enable them. I also disabled Norton 360. (I followed all instructions, up to and including submitting the database for rebuilding.)

I tried the same URLs that I pasted above, and got the same results as yesterday.

I submitted the error report again: 2009806826

Please let me know what else I should do. Thanks for your help!

    Greg
  • It looks like something is still conflicting. If all other extensions are disabled, I'd look for other programs running in the background on your system. You should also verify that the extensions you disabled are, in fact, still disabled, since certain extensions that are installed by other programs have a habit of turning themselves back on. Also, with Norton, be sure to disable the Identity Safe in particular. (I don't know if this is separate from the rest of it.)

You could also try installing Zotero into a separate Firefox profile to test whether it's something in your old profile that's conflicting or something else on your system.

I have found the problem! It was completely related to Norton 360; however, it was not related to Identity Safe because I had never enabled that function to begin with.

Previously, when I disabled Norton Firewall and Norton Auto-protect, this did not solve the problem. Since Norton offers no way to disable the complete package and remove it from memory, I had no other choice but to uninstall Norton. (When you open Task Manager in XP and try to end Norton processes, Norton refuses to quit.)

After the uninstall (which took forever -- Norton really doesn't want to leave) I rebooted, and now Zotero works as flawlessly as before.

I have no idea why Norton caused this problem, but here is a partial diagnosis, for what it's worth.

My earlier problems seemed to have been related to journals that required me to go through my campus proxy (UCLA). I never had any problems with free sites not requiring some kind of login (like WorldCat or the UCLA Library).

So now I have Zotero back, but I no longer have a firewall or anti-virus software. :-(

Please let me know if I can do anything to help nail down this issue.
