Feature request Zotero beta

Hi,
I wonder if you could add verbose in-app log for both debugging purpose and to have a real time overview what the app is doing without the need to run it in the console.

For example right now I am syncing webdav files and have no idea what it is exactly doing besides ambiguous "Syncing files" message. I dont want to stop it and rerun it in console each time I feel it has some problems.
Thank you
  • Are you aware of https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output ? Does that not do what you need?
  • Oh I must have missed that, sorry. It does the job but only partially. It has kind of non-intuitive time stamps, so how can I view events in system clock time? And it is not exactly real time, you have to reopen to get current values. Is the log written to a file I can query?
  • Unrelated to this problem, it has been a couple hours already, but still only a very small portion of my database was synced to webdav (box.com). Is it expected to upload this slow? (cca 350 pdf files uploaded in about 4 hours).
  • No, sorry, if you want real-time debug (or debug to a file) you need to run Zotero from the console. That strikes me as fairly standard behavior for software (it also slows down Zotero, so it can't be the default).

The speed of file upload to your webDAV depends entirely on your internet connection and your webDAV, so nothing we can say about expected speed.
  • Ok thanks for clarification. Seems, I just need to wait this through (still over 5k files to upload), ... uhgh

(@adamsmith, but perhaps a simple updating file counter could be shown by default? E.g. "Syncing files (34/5062)"; that at least shows you if things are still progressing. Or does Zotero already have that?)
  • File sync with Zotero storage does that -- is that not the case for WebDAV sync?
  • No there is no such indicator. Another thing is while uploading, my cpu is rocket high so I can't use the laptop. Don't know if this is zotero issue or box.com webdav. I don't remember sync being this painful with zotero 4.0
  • If it's still going, can you provide a Debug ID for 30 seconds or so of file syncing?
  • Hi,
    thank you for your response.
    Background information:
I have switched from 4.0 to 5.0 recently but stayed offline to avoid troubles. Once I felt 5.0 is stable enough to work with I set-up the sync settings as for 4.0. I was using webdav with box.com for attachments. First I tried to connect zotero 5.0 with webdav, but the software acted as it did not recognized any files synced with webdav and was staying in syncing mode. Therefore I have decided to start fresh and deleted all files in webdav directory and began a fresh sync. This is where the issues with low speed and high cpu became a trouble. I dont know if this helps, but I have found information online that if webdav for box.com cant connect to the nearest download accelerator they use, it directly connects to main servers in California, which obviously are limited in bandwidth.
I have stopped sync yesterday as I needed to work on the laptop, but rerun it today just to give you some detailed info.

Well, that would have been the better thing to debug (though it may have just been doing some housekeeping after the upgrade). If you deleted all files on WebDAV — which should almost never be necessary — and then try to upload them all again, it's going to take some time to process all the files. I'm not seeing any obvious problems in the debug output, though we're still working on optimizing new code in 5.0.

5.0 currently doesn't provide as much file sync process as 4.0 did, so you will indeed have to just wait it out.
