Word plugin failing

Not sure what changed. Tried to add a reference -- got error "Highlighted citation no longer exists"

The standalone shows item does exist. Tried many other items -- same error.

Tried reinstalling word plugin (Word 2016) -- got error from Word "We can't open Zotero-winword-plugin-3.5.6 (1) because we found a problem with its contents.
  • This is usually not recommended, but try reinstalling Zotero (if you are using standalone) or the Word plugin if you are using Firefox and then try reinstalling the integration from the Cite pane again.

If that doesn't help and you still get the error, make sure that the referenced items still exist in your library. Things like exporting and importing the library for whatever reason can also break the links.

If the referenced items definitely still show up in your Zotero library, then follow the debugging broken documents instructions to try and debug the document, as it is likely that the field codes got corrupted.

Alternatively you can try working from an earlier backup of the document and see if the references work there, which would indicate that the current version of the document definitely got corrupted somehow.
  • noticed errors in Java update. Restarted machine. tested in blank word page. Works. Tested in 15 page file -- failed. But, then it worked... and works reliably.

Probably a hang-up with security protocols, updates, and the phase of the moon... thanks
  • Note that Zotero does not use Java at all (except in LibreOffice), so that part was entirely unrelated. Restarting likely helped, though.
