1818021710 google scholar error: computer or network sending automated queries

I am receiving the following error on google scholar (Firefox) when using zotero on a Mac OS X 10.9.5, and am unable to access google scholar. I recently installed the firefox version of zotero and removed the stand alone version. Once synched, I had exceeded my quota so bought the 2GB plan, but am still receiving the error. I can access google scholar on Safari on the same machine. Can anyone help?

  • did you install the google scholar for zotero add-on or did you make significant use of the "retrieve metadata" function in Zotero? Those are the only two reasons Zotero sends queries to google scholar.
  • Thanks, Adam. I just installed this

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/zotero-scholar-citations/

but am still receiving error on google scholar.

I suspect I may be making significant use of "retrieve metadata" function, but not sure if I know how to disable or whether that would detract from its functionality? Any comments much appreciated. Karl
  • no, you should _disable_ that add-on, not install it, if google scholar locks you out.

    Retrieve metadata is this: https://www.zotero.org/support/retrieve_pdf_metadata
You have to actually use this. It's not something Zotero does by itself.
  • Thanks. Sorry I misunderstood. However, I had the problem before I installed the add-on. In any event, I just removed it, but no luck. I then removed zotero, and still can't access google scholar, so suspect the zotero installation tweaked something in my firefox preferences?

Thanks for the link. I did not attempt to import my library of pdfs - I was simply trying to add citations from google scholar into my zotero database. I guess I'll unistall firefox and try again. I'll also try on a pc in the office on Monday.
  • Try clearing your browser cookies and restarting your browser.
  • No, don't bother re-installing things. This has nothing to do with any software malfunctioning.

You just downloaded citations from google scholar more quickly than they allow. There's not much you can do about that. You can maybe get it back temporarily by clearly your cookies, but otherwise you'll just have to wait and proceed more slowly next time.
  • Clearing the cookies and waiting for it to finish synching after each search worked. THANK YOU!`
