The best thing to do there is to save from the article page instead of the PDF — so https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4368415 instead of the above link. Then you'll automatically get full metadata as well as the PDF.
On a site that wasn't supported, you could save the PDF directly to Zotero and then right-click and choose Retrieve Metadata from PDF, which will hopefully retrieve the full metadata.
@adamsmith, @zuphilip, any reason the translator can't save from the PDF link?
Saving directly from PDF views on PubMed Central now works (Your version of Zotero will automatically update within 24hs, or you can update manually using the "Update Now" button in the "General" tab of the Zotero preferences. If you're using Standalone, restart Zotero and your browser after updating.)
I use PubMed and PubMedCentral a great deal and was delighted with the prospect that Zotero (I am using the Firefox plug-in and it is up to date) would be able to directly import .pdf files from the PubMedCentral site (I gather there is no way to do this with plain PubMed even though I have institutional access to many of the journals that I might find articles from via a PubMed search).
I can not import anything from PubMedCentral. Even when going directly to the link in the discussion above (i.e https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4368415) when I hit the article icon next to the "Z" in the upper right hand corner of Firefox, absolutely nothing happens. No citation and no pdf appear in my Zotero collection.
PubMed Central appears currently completely broken. I'm not sure if that's on their part or ours (nothing on the Zotero side has changed -- so it's definitely _something_ they changed, but it could just be a legitimate change in their lookup service that we need to accommodate).
