"An error occurred communicating with Zotero. Please ensure that Firefox is open en try again".

I have this error and it doesnt go away. none of these tricks with new documents or copy paste stuff works. always the same error.
Pleeeease, i need help.
  • Have you tried all the steps on the word processor plugin troubleshooting page?
  • Hi, thanks for the fast reply but all those things didnt help. since the last time it worked i installed the new firefox version, and i installed a new internet conection. Could any of that cause problems?
    Also, in the zotero error report i get this:
    Deprecated method document.getSelection() called. Please use window.getSelection() instead.

    Deprecated method document.getSelection() called. Please use window.getSelection() instead.

    REport ID for that is 56086604.
  • Hi, it is suddenly working again (i didnt change anything). I would say it has something to do with this new internet connection. I am using two different ones (work, home) so maybe thats messing up the whole thing a little bit.
    Thanks anyway!!
  • After being a happy user for nearly one month I got the same problem when trying to insert references in old and new documents. No connection! Luckily, I read some where about making sure that "working offline" wasn't activated in Firefox. I also checked Internet Explorer and saw that "working offline" was active, for some reason. Making sure that "working online" was checked in BOTH Firefox and IE sovled the problem for me. (Windows XP, Word 2003, Firefox 3.0.4, IE 7)

    The IE offline issue reported by Grenilla also applied to me (same configuration). I propose to update the troubleshooting page.
  • I use Windows Vista, Word 2007, Firefox 3.0.13, Zotero 1.0.10. For me nothing in the "word processor plugin troubleshooting" worked. However, I could still insert citations in blank documents.
    I was working in a document with track changes on, yet simply disabling it as recommended in the trouble shooting page did not help. Only when I tried to accepting all changes in the document, Zotero resumed normal operation. Maybe it might help if this is made more explicit on the trouble shooting page.
  • Same problem, suddenly started getting this message-
    trying to insert new citation does generate a zotero error- report 2128999119

    went through checklist (see below)

    Debugging Broken Documents

    "If you can insert citations into new documents but receive an error in an existing document, follow these steps to find the cause of the error:"

    1. Open the Document Preferences via the Zotero plugin toolbar...
    -> can't open, get same msg

    2. Make sure the Track Changes feature in Word/OpenOffice is disabled,
    -> it is
    3. Make a copy of your document to use for debugging.
    ->did
    4. Open the copied file and check if you get the error after switching to a ...
    ->can't open document prefs get same msg
    5. If the document has a bibliography, delete it and check if you still ...
    ->no bibliog. yet
    6. Check if “Report Errors…” in the Zotero Actions menu ()...
    ->doing that now
    7. Try to isolate the problematic citation. Copy half of the document at a time
    ->copied each half, can insert new citations when each half is copied into new document. empty document that is left can not communicate w. zotero
  • thofer: It's due to the style you were previously using no longer existing. This will be fixed in the new plugins that are coming with 2.0b7 later this week, but in the meantime you should be able to fix it by copying the document content (rather than the file itself) to a new document, which will allow you to open the Doc Prefs window.
