managing the Zotero library - what works best for you?

Hello,

I'm curios what kind of approach do you use to manage your Zotero library? Do you assign Tags or do you create a new collection folder for every category or subject or both?

In my case I have a lots of papers, articles and books that could be assigned to more than just one collection. I usually also did just that by duplicating my items, but that was not really the best approach as my library grew and my tree of collections got longer and longer. I decided to delete all my collection and assigning tags to my items instead because it gives me the possibility to describe them as accurate as I want without having to deal with duplicating them. At the end I only have one big library folder with all my items which I can filter by their tags or by using the search function.

  • You don't need to duplicate items to assign them to multiple collections. Collections work like iTunes playlists, not like file system folders. Items can be in as many or few collections as you want.
