Chicago/SBL citation only gives short form

edited January 3, 2017
I use Chicago full note and SBL full note. When I get a footnote citation either from copy menu or drag with shift key I only get author last name, short title. How do I get the full footnote citation?

  • What do you mean by "copy menu" specifically? Right-click --> Create Bibliography and then Note?
    If so, could you post
    1) Your Zotero version
    2) The output for both Note and Bibliography for one example item where this occurs.
  • I mean: Edit Menu->Copy Citation

I use Zotero version 4.0.29.15 Standalone, MacOS Sierra, MacBook Pro 2012

Here is what Zotero gives me:

Note: Levinsohn, Discourse Features of New Testament Greek.
Bibliography: Levinsohn, Stephen H. Discourse Features of New Testament Greek. 2nd edition. Dallas, TX: SIL International, 2000.

I want for Note: Stephen H. Levinsohn, Discourse Features of New Testament Greek, 2nd ed. (Dallas, TX: SIL International, 2000). which is what both formats call for.

    What am I missing here?
  • So the Note/Bibliography above are from the "Create Bibliography" right-click menu I describe above, yes?
I want to make sure you're not just getting them on quick copy, i.e. when using the Edit -- Copy Citation option or Shift+drag.

Do you have any Zotero add-ons installed? Do these look right in the Style editor:
https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/reference_test_pane (open from the advanced tab of the Zotero preferences)?
  • That's it!! Thank you so much, Adam. I had no clue that is where the full note came from.
  • great -- could you say which part solved it?
  • I did not know that "Create Bibliography" right-click menu was the place to get the full note. In previous versions Shift-Drag worked, so I did not know the alternative. Now that I see the documentation on Creating Bibliographies I understand, but it says nothing about this being the full citation form, as opposed the the short citation form from the other methods. Once again, thanks for your help.
  • shift+drag still does work -- you just have the wrong citation style selected as "Default Output Format" in the "Export" tab of the Zotero preferences (Chicago note, from the looks of it).
  • Thanks again.
