pdf cannot open, linked 'helper' application does not exist; related to acrobat reader dc update?

Dear Zotero-Team,
since today I cannot open pdf files from zotero anymore. To my knowledge I have not made any changes, but the acrobat reader was updated to acrobat reader DC. Do you know of any problems with this update?
Ths is the error message that I get (unfortunately in german):
C:\path2zotero\storage\XY...\xy.pdf konnte nicht geöffnet werden, weil die damit verknüpfte Hilfsanwendung nicht existiert. Ändern Sie die Verknüpfung in Ihren Einstellungen.
Zotero still finds the path and the path is still correct, I checked that.
Does anyone have an idea what went wrong?
Thanks in advance.
  • if you do right-click --> Show File (Datei anzeigen?) and then double-click the file in the File Explorer Window that open, does that work normally?
  • Kind of. I just figuered out that right-click->view pdf does not work, but right-click open in external viewer does work. I think I can live with that :)
    Thx
  • Is that in Firefox then? Then the place to look would be Firefox's file handling settings.
  • Yes, it's firefox. Still, I do not find what to change there. But it's fine, I can deal with that, if that is the only problem ;)
  • Paste about:preferences#applications
in the URL bar, press return, and you should see a list of file/media types and associated applications. There may be multiple PDF-related entries. Check what those say.
  • if that's empty, then something in your Firefox is pretty fried. Can you open PDFs from the web still? In any case, I'd look to mozilla for help then.
  • I am having the same problem, using a Mac (safari). My colleague is adding pdf that I cannot see on stand alone (says file was removed) and when I go to web version, PDF is not there.
  • @sarkisc -- no that's a different issue. In miss's case the files are there, they don't open. See https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/files_not_syncing and start a new thread for anything more.
  • Sorry, sounded like issue I was having. Good luck miss!
  • Hi,
I found the solution. deleting MIMEtypes.rdf in mozilla solved it. Thanks for the hint.
