PDF attachment in JSTOR

For several days now, we have not been able to get attachments from JSTOR. Students in my library work in Firefox and in Chrome with the Chrome extension and it is not working in either one. Once you open a PDF in JSTOR and accept the terms, then click on Save to Zotero(JSTOR), the box opens like it is getting the citation information and PDF but nothing ever appears in your folder.

We checked to make sure that the Automatically attach associated PDFs and other files when saving items is checked in General Preferences.

You can save just the Journal citation information by clicking Save to Zotero(JSTOR) on the article information page but the PDF saving is dimmed indicating it is not saving the PDF. You can also go to the JSTOR Cite this Item button and choose Export a RIS file (For EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager, Zotero…) and the citation information will save.

Saving the PDF is JSTOR is one of the primary reasons our students use Zotero and we have never had this issue until these past few days. Please advise to a fix or if our steps are incomplete.
  • So you are accepting the terms before using the "Save to Zotero" button, yes?

Could we get a couple of URLs where this is failing exactly as you see them?
Auto-downloading PDFs from JSTOR works fine for me.
  • It is truly bizarre. I have just spent 15 minutes working with downloading the JSTOR pdf in both Firefox and Chrome. It worked several times in Firefox then suddenly stopped. It never worked in Chrome.
Yes, I am accepting the terms before using the "Save to Zotero" button.

    here is link to try:
    http://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/25073748.pdf
  • I had the same problem today - Chrome, logged into jstor, tried to get a set of citations with pdf files, got the citations, no pdf.
  • scratch that - seems to have timed out on me. I redid terms and it worked.
  • I seem to have the same problem. Import of PDFs via JSTOR doesn't work for me. Instead, I download it using Internet Explorer and then attach it using ZotFile's "Attach New File" feature. It's a bit cumbersome but at least it works for me.
  • Hm... That is strange, because the translator for JSTOR was update two weeks ago to capture also the information directly from the PDF. What Zotero icon do you see on the pdf page e.g. https://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/4308405.pdf ? What happens when you click on the icon?
  • It is a grey website icon. When I click on it, I get the following item.

Accept Terms and Conditions on JSTOR. (n.d.). Retrieved 18 January 2017, from https://www.jstor.org/tc/verify?origin=/stable/pdf/4308405.pdf

Clicking on "I Accept, Proceed to PDF" triggers only for the page to be reloaded.

I use Firefox with NoScript as one Add-On. I'm not sure if this might cause a problem.
  • zurpher -- you need to accept JSTOR's terms and conditions manually once before the pdf download will work.

Also, yes, it's certainly possible that noScript breaks this, so do try without.
  • I have now been able to download a PDF from JSTOR.

Reeve, J. (2006). Teachers as Facilitators: What Autonomy‐Supportive Teachers Do and Why Their Students Benefit. The Elementary School Journal, 106(3), 225–236. https://doi.org/10.1086/501484

    http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1086/501484

I'm not sure why it is working now as I haven't disabled NoScript or changed anything else to my knowledge.

@zuphilip I could see the journal article icon and successfully imported the bibliographic data and PDF. No tags have been imported from the PDF or the website though.
  • yes, there are no keywords in the RIS export from JSTOR, so we'd have to scrape them from the page which is a bit problematic because they're not available in every view so we'd get inconsistent import, I believe.
