Understanding Standalong use

Hi, I use the Firefox version on my own computer but will be teaching grad students how to use Zotero. While some will have their own laptops, others might want to use our library computers. They have the standalone version installed. It is already integrated with Word on those computers, but I can't figure out how to download citations and pdfs without the browser button. I tried exporting a citation from an Ebsco database, but it just saved it, and not into Zotero. I tried the "open" option, choosing to open it in Zotero, and the article did not show up in Zotero. I can't find a relevant page in the Documentation.
