Upgrade StorageFirst sync attempt on new installation: invalid response from server

I installed a fresh copy of firefox followed by zotero 1.5b1 on a new windows installation (actually a new bootcamp installation on a mac, but I guess that's an unimportant detail).
I entered my zotero sync server settings and then switched to the reset tab and selected restore from zotero server (maybe this was unnecessary and caused the following problem?).
Now zotero seems to be trying to sync (the circular arrow is swirling) but nothing happens for a while....... then eventually an 'invalid response from server' error is produced.
Syncing is still working ok on my other machine + I have double checked the login credentials I am using on the new machine.
Any help on what I should do next to resolve this would be much appreciated.
