Submitting styles on GitHub: master or dependent

I would like to submit some styles on GitHub. They are extensions of styles already available in the Style Repository. Does that mean I should submit them to /dependent? Or to /master?
  • into the root folder (of the branch master); don't use dependent. Dependent is just for styles that contain nothing but links to existing styles (look at some of the files in the folder if that's not clear).
  • Can you describe in a bit more detail what kind of styles you'd like to contribute? E.g. we're always happy to accept styles for journals we don't yet cover, but we're usually hesitant to accept styles that are just small variations of a single style format (e.g. versions with or without a DOI).
  • I'd like to propose versions of 7 high-use styles that include the Extra field as an annotation. This is the approach used by the annotated Chicago style currently in the Style Repository.

I appreciate it's not desirable to have two versions of every style in the repository, but having annotation versions of this handful of high-use styles would be immensely useful. A large chunk of Zotero use at my institution is postgrads and upper-division undergrads who are working on annotated bibliographies.

It's true these are small variations, but I think they would have a big impact. Thanks for considering.
  • sorry, we're not going to take those. It's just too much work to keep those up to date and they make the repository unmanageable.
I'd suggest hosting them locally, as e.g. Keith Stanger already does for the same purpose (though using the abstract field) here:

  • Can you give a list of the seven styles for which you'd like to have these variants?

While I appreciate that some people might like these annotated versions, there are significant costs to adding style variants: it adds to the burden of keeping the different variants synchronized, and users are presented with more options (which doesn't necessarily improve the user experience: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Paradox_of_Choice).
  • Beat by @adamsmith, who I was going to defer to anyway, since he puts in most of the work of keeping the current variants synchronized. My apologies, but I hope you understand our position on this.
  • No problem - thanks anyway. I fully understand your position and I appreciate the work you do to maintain the repository.

And yes, we have our annotation styles hosted locally: http://researchguides.uvm.edu/zoterostyles
  • that's great, thanks
