Problem using Zotero on multiple computers

I use a large portable hard drive to shuttle my work between home and office. I work directly off the portable when at work. When I get home I sync the portable drive to a folder on my home computer and work in that folder at home.

I first installed Zotero on my home computer, and set the preferences to use a folder on my hard drive (C:/Work/Research/Zotero) as the storage location. Before going to work the entire C:/Work/ folder is synced to my portable drive.

I then installed Zotero on my work computer and set the preferences to use the folder on my portable drive (G:/Work/Reserach/Zotero) as the storage location. Once I set the storage location, I could see the reference I had added at home in my database. I then added four or five references to the database.

When I returned home, I synced my portable to the hard drive on my home computer. But when I start Zotero, the only reference in my database is the one I initially added after installation. I can't see any references I added at work.

I tried setting my storage location to the storage folder on my portable drive with the same result.

What am I doing wrong? Isn't this the way to use Zotero on multiple computers?

What you described sounds like it should have worked. As you move files around like this you can keep track of the size of the zotero.sqlite file and keep track of the date modified info on the file to make sure you're moving the correct files around. You might also try upgrading to Zotero 1.5, which includes some powerful syncing features that should make all of this much easier to handle.
  • Thanks. It seems to be acting as it should now.
  • @cdt I would echo Tjowens's comments: You will be much better off syncing via the Zotero server rather than shuttling around the sqlite file.
