pdf cannot be found anymore

Hi,
this is my second post, so please excuse me if I am doing something wrong or may be missing something.

I cannot open a lot of my attached or standalone pdfs in zotero anymore. I have a feeling that it is only happening with pdfs that I dragged into zotero as a copy and deleted the file later from the original location.
This is what I did:
- I dragged the pdfs from a location on my computer into zotero
- retrieved metadata if possible and renamed it with zotfile
- the pdfs are stored in zotero storage as a copy
- later I deleted the files in the original folders
- now, when I double click on the pdf in zotero to open it with adobe reader I get the error message that the file cannot be found.
- when I right click on the pdf and choose "show file" the folder of the pdf in the storage folder opens and I can see the pdf, but can also not open it from there. The pdf file has a size bigger than zero, so I believe that it is not a link, but a real copy.
- other pdfs which I downloaded directly with zotero still can be opened.

At the same time there is another problem with my syncing. Syncing takes forever and never completes and after a while it stops and gives an error message that file syncing could not be completed. I am not sure if the two problems are connected or happen independently. This is why I am mentioning it here, too.

This is the bug ID: 1100097218

Do you think this happens because I deleted the files from their original location, and if so, why (since they have been copied to the storage, not linked)? Is there a way to repair this?

I really hope you can help me get my pdfs back. Thanks so much in advance!
  • What exactly happens when you try to open the file directly from your file system, after doing "show file"
(and no, this doesn't sound like it'd be because you deleted the original)
  • Hi Adam,

thank you for your answer. It happens the exact same thing: I double click on the pdf and adobe displays the message: An error occured when trying to open the file. The file cannot be opened. The message is in german, so the frasing in english could slightly differ.

Strangely, other pdfs which still also exist in their original locations do still open.
  • by the way, my syncing apparently just does not complete because there is not enough space on my webdav server. I guess this has nothing to do with the not opening of pdfs.
  • if the PDF file fails to open in acrobat, I'm not quite sure how to proceed. Zotero doesn't actually touch the content of files, so it has little to do with this. You said they're larger than 0kb -- how large are we talking?

Have you investigated if they're on the WebDAV?
(and provide the error messages as you see them, i.e. in your case in German, please).
  • Hi Adam,

good news: Today after restarting the computer I was able to open the pdfs again the normal way. Sorry for bothering you with this. Maybe it had nothing to do with zotero, but was a strange behaviour of my system. I'll probably never find out why this happens ;)

In case you are still curious: The pdfs sizes range from a couple of kb (say 56 kb) to thousands of kb, some are even a few gb big.

The exact error message I got in German was: "Beim öffnen dieses Dokuments ist ein Fehler aufgetreten. Diese Datei kann nicht gefunden werden."
I found the zip-folder with the same cryptic name as in the local zotero storage on the web dav server, but did not unpack it to have a look if it is inside, because now it works again ;)

Thanks so much for your help!
  • odd, but glad it's back working for you. Very like unrelated to Zotero.
