File not saved to hard drive

I've been suing Zotero for a few years now, 3 days ago files stopped being saved to my computer. I open the journal article PDF in Firefox (and have downloaded Chrome and tried it as well) and click "Save to Zotero", a green check mark appears, and the citation (title, author, etc) are all saved and appear when I sync but the little blue bubble under the paper clip column is empty. Clicking on the file gives me the "File not found" notification".

Today I received the notification that I've reached my "File Storage quota. Some files were not uploaded. Other Zotero data will continue to sync to the server."

Is this the reason the actual file is no longer saved? It doesn't make sense that I can save it and locate it manually though... I can save it manually to another place on my hard drive, locate it, but this is far more time consuming.

I'm quite certain the actual file is not on my computer because the newest 'storage' folders (ie. MXE4A5TW) do not contain a PDF file, they only have a .zotero-ft-cache file. The older ones have both the PDF and the cache file so for some reason the PDF isn't saving.

I need to purchase more storage because I have a free account right now, but I'm only interested in doing so if the issue is resolved in doing so.

The Debug ID is D2023972031.
  • I have an idea of what might be going on: are you using Zotero Standalone? If so, make sure the data directory is shared with Zotero for Firefox: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/sharing_data_directory
otherwise, the files/items actually make it to Standalone via sync and in that case, yes, the lack of storage would actually matter. Once you've set up correctly, your files will save locally regardless of whether you have storage left online or not.
  • That makes sense, but when I changed the file path to the one on my hard drive described under "Sharing the data directory manually" the "Save to Zotero" check box disappeared from Firefox

Was that what I was supposed to do?
  • I want the file in my Standalone ie. on my hard drive for now, I'll worry about paying for more storage so I can sync to the server after I'm done this semester's thesis projects and papers.

    Thanks for your help!
  • the check box disappears from where? That shouldn't happen.
  • Is there a way to add a screenshot? I found a workaround. But it is strange.

In Chrome there's just the little icon that you click.
In firefox with the addon when you click "Download" you usually have 2 options to chose with the radio buttons:

Open with: (drop down Adobe Reader, other)
    Save File
Save to Zotero (and then a check box for retrieve Metadata)

The 3rd option is gone when Zotero Standalone is open. It appears and I can save to zotero when the Standalone is closed. Not a big deal to open and close the Standalone but I'd rather not have to.
  • Right, that option isn't available in connector mode (why are you using Standalone at all, by the way?).

But note that this should typically not be your default way of saving files to Zotero. You should in most cases just use the Save to Zotero Icon from the article page where available.
    https://www.zotero.org/support/getting_stuff_into_your_library#web_translators

For PDFs, you can also just open them and then click the Save to Zotero button.
