Tips and triks on documentation

There are some tricks or tips in the forum that are not documented in documentation. For example:

1. auto format in Word or LibreOffice/OpenOffice for adding the hyperlink to the URL.
2. sending unused variables to the document throw Extra field.

I think that tips such these are very useful for Zotero users and should be documented on Wiki and not only in the forum. I can add them to the Czech Wiki but I suppose that the English Wiki is main and should be the first.
  • 1. is great and yes, we should add but
I think I'm hesitant about 2. because it's a hack that Zotero core isn't all that keen on (for understandable reasons), so there is something to be said for keeping it very informal.
  • O.K. can you (or somebody else) add this in English Wiki - my English is everything else but not perfect. :-o
@2 - I'm thinking that's a great feature and very usable for users if a style has specific requirements: ISO690 needs standard identification (ISBN, ISSN, ISMN etc.) for example, some older books are published in series and do not have ISBN but only ISSN. Zotero does not have ISSN field for books yet and this is the way to send ISSN to the paper. Yes, I agree that it is not the clear way but it si the better way as manual bibliography editing in my paper.
  • the problem with 2. isn't that it's unclear, the problem is that we don't want to promise all that much in terms of how that's going to be migrated in the future, not break, etc.
  • I prepare draft of point 1:

You can change URL addresses in the bibliography to the hyperlink by AutoFormat function in MS Word or Open/LibreOffice. In the first step, you must Remove Field Codes. Attention this step unlink citation in your document from Zotero!!! Use it only on the final version of your document before the submissions. In the second step select your bibliography (or whole text in the document) and apply Auto Format (you can use shortcut Ctrl+Alt+K in MS Word).

Can somebody correct my English. THX
  • You can convert URL addresses in the bibliography to working hyperlinks using the AutoFormat function in MS Word or Open/LibreOffice. Follow these steps. First, click the Remove Field Codes button in the Zotero menu. This converts Zotero citations to plain text and disconnects your document from Zotero, so you should save a new copy of your document and use this function on only the final version. Next, select your bibliography (or all of the text in the document, if desired) and apply the Word/Open/LibreOffice AutoFormat (the keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+K in MS Word).
  • @bwiernik -- feel free to just edit the wiki

  • I don't think that works anymore, does it?
  • I am not sure. I can add a picture as an attachment child item), that works fine. I can add a picture into the note, but on the web library, I do not see the picture in the note. I see in the second PC in my office yesterday if this note with the picture is synchronized.

Synchronization works between clients (Standalone Zotero or Firefox extension). But the size of the picture is limited. I think it is a due limitation of note size and coding picture directly in note by tag <img src="data:image/jpeg;base64,...>. In My Library on the web zotero.org I do not see this picture and editing of note on web zotero.org delete inserted code of the picture.
Picture included as link to the different location e.g. <img src="http://www.ansorge.website/obrazek/1/logo/"/> works perfect.
  • data: URIs shouldn't be used in notes. To the extent that they work at all, it's just because they haven't been properly disallowed everywhere, but they're a common source of note-too-large errors. They certainly shouldn't be recommended in the documentation.

At some point in the future it might be nice to make it possible to embed attached images in notes, but those would still sync as files.
  • "URIs shouldn't be used in notes" - Yes I agree. The only URL (Note: Image URL is a standard field in Insert/edit Image window.) should be allowed. Can you disallow URI for notes? I use drag&drop for insert picture (with URI) to the note.

"to make it possible to embed attached images in notes sync as files" - I vote for this functionality and not only for pictures. I attach supplementary materials (e.g. original Word document submitted to the publisher, Powerpoint presentation from conference etc.) on the same level as published items (articles, books etc.). For me is very interesting to have three levels of items in Zotero:
    1. Metadata
    2. Document described by metadata
    3. Supplementary materials
  • no, you misunderstand: URIs in notes are fine. ZotFile e.g. uses those routinely.
It's data: URIs (<img src="data:image/jpeg;base64) that are not. I.e. you can link to an image, but not embed the image data within the note.
  • Maybe I misunderstand, but only URI can contain data, URL cannot contain data but can contain only locator.
  • A "data URI" is something specific. (And all URLs are technically URIs.)
