Report ID:1076924913 Translator cannot find title of eLife paper

The paper I am trying to file is here:

http://elife.elifesciences.org/content/3/e02313

Zotero abandon’s the attempt with a translator error. It is using the eLife translator and the Zotero Preferences (using Safari) reports that there is a JavaScript error, "No title found for item". (FWIW, I can’t copy and paste the error message, as copying seems disallowed.)

This seem reproducible: have tried reloading the offending page; same results.

Edit: Ooops, sorry, posted in the wrong thread. Looking into the eLife issue though
  • Make sure your Zotero extension is up to date in Safari (should be 4.0.8)

If that doesn't help, see https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
  • Extension is v 4.0.8 (updated a while back).

I’ve read the troubleshooting doc (before writing here). No mention of eLife in the list of known issues (but I’ve had trouble at least once before; can’t remember what resolved that or if it got resolved).
  • If steps 1-11 on that page don't help, 12 requests several bits of information, please provide those.
  • Dan, could you take a look at the error report in the title?
  • "No title specified for item"
  • Yes, but... anything about the URL (proxy?), Safari version, anything?

GrantJ, can you submit a Debug ID (from Safari) for that import, starting with loading the page through the error you see in the bottom right? https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output
  • Connector Report IDs don't include URLs.

Last Safari 5 version for 10.6.

Locale is en-au, for what that's worth.
  • "GrantJ, can you submit a Debug ID"

    - The report ID from the title of my opening post has what you are asking for - ?

    "Report ID:1076924913 …"

"12 requests several bits of information, please provide those."

Sorry I missed the third of four bullet points there (the rest was given earlier):

    - Zotero Standalone 4.0.17
    - Mac OS 10.6.8
    - Safari 5.1.10

If you’ve other things you want best you suggest them: ‘etc.’ (as in the doc’s) is kind-of open-ended!
  • follow the link in aurimas's post for instructions on submitting a Debug ID - it's not the same as an error report ID
  • Debug ID: D1384641827

[off-topic] Dan - good catch on the locale. FWIW: AFAIK there is no en-nz locale, which I’d use if they provided it! It’s a bit like asking Canadians to use an USA locale.

  • @aurimas - how about testing for citation_title before returning on detectWeb - that may very well fix this. At a minimum it would prevent detect from firing for a page it can't import.
  • I mean, we can put in workarounds, but I'm not entirely sure what I'm working around here. That same page on my end has all the necessary metadata. Can you reproduce this?
  • no I can't - works for me. I'm thinking it might be picking up an overlayed iframe or adpage or something else we're not seeing. Not the first time that has happened.
  • I'm thinking it might be picking up an overlayed iframe or adpage or something else we're not seeing.
All of that would be showing up in the debug log. I'm only seeing a single detectWeb call (unless Dan omitted others, which I doubt he would).

Another clue that something is getting really messed up is "Title was not found in meta tags. Using document title as title", yet there is still no title. So I'm thinking that there's something wrong with passing the document object to the EM translator from eLife. I'll have to investigate later, but it seems like this is very specific to his setup, since it's not reproducible on Windows with Safari 5.
  • @GrantJ, do you have a 32 bit or 64 bit processor? It probably doesn't matter, but I will try to reproduce this in a virtual machine and I might as well work under the same conditions.

    Hello there,

I get the same error message when trying to save any document from proquest (switched to czech language) to my zotero library. Any ideas how to fix this? I´m using Chrome Extension + updated version of standalone.
