Making one bibliography from multiple documents and edited volume entries

Sorry, under time pressure here, and can't easily find answer

1. Is it possible to make a single bibliography from multiple chapter files? My publisher wants separate chapter files. I could merge into one big document, but hoping some way to do it from different documents.

2. I'm finding that on Chicago Manual Style, it will generate a bibliography from an article in an edited volume but doesn't automatically also generate a separate entry for the entire volume itself. Any workarounds wrt that issue?

Thanks. Trying to turn in a manuscript tomorrow, and of course, snafus galore.

    1. Just putting them all in one document is probably the quickest. You may also be able to use Word's "Master Document" feature, but I doubt that will save you much time.

    2. Nothing automatic, no (that's also not a general requirement, including in the Chicago Manual). But you can add items to the bibliography even when they're not cited in the text using the "Edit Bibliography" function in the plugin.

(edit: FWIW, my rule of thumb is that you shouldn't spend more than 10mins searching before asking a question, so no worries - that's what the forum is for).
  • Thanks Adam
    That was quick, and appreciated.
  • I have a follow-up question.

    1. Do I have to integrate multiple chapters in individual documents into one big document? I'm trying to avoid this because the document will be so big that it will be slow to edit in Word. I tried merging the documents, and it caused problems.

One solution would be to have a bibliography at the end of each chapter, but that's a strange thing to do.
  • rob - the way I do this with my ~300p dissertation is to edit in chapters and only merge them as the very last step, that works pretty nicely.

As I say above a master document may be another option - for a long time they had a very bad reputation, not sure if that's still justified.
  • Thanks. I'll look into the master doc. option or else merge.
  • Hi, I have an urgent question:
I have about 10 chapters for my thesis and I am trying to compile one bibliography in the end.

If I paste all the documents into one zotero is unable 'insert bibliograpy' probably because the file is too big (about 100,000 words).

The Master document option did not work.

But also: since I am not citing different authors in one chapter, authors which have published multiple sources in one year, the individual chapter do not consider that there is an 2008a, 2008b, 2009c for example but then in the bibliography it shows up as that...

That is, I assume a common thing to encounter, and I really hope Zotero has a solution for that???

    Anything?

    Thanks!
  • Hello Zunami,
In the end I kept each dissertation chapter in a separate Word document. I produced a bibliography for each chapter, and then I copied and pasted that into a bibliography. This divided up the bibliography into a separate block for each chapter with some repeated items, so it is not ideal.

I too need to create a single bibliography when it becomes a book, and I will probably add everything to one Word document and try that approach. There's isn't a simple way to go as far as I know.
  • A bibliography in a 100k words document should work. What actually happens when you try?
