No Add-ons tab in MS Word 2016

I've been using Zotero (first with firefox and now stand alone) for 6 years. I just updated to MS office 2016 and can't find the add-ons tab. I know my startup location is set and my zotero.dot file is there. I've restarted my computer and it's not appearing! Help!

I have OS Yosemite 10.10.5 if that helps.
  • What is your startup location set to exactly? We've been seeing this set to all types of crazy places and those won't work. It needs to be in ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Startup/Word or a very similar location.
  • That is the the location it's in. When I go there in finder and open the zotero.dot file it has the add-ons tab, but it won't show up in any other document.
  • I don't know Word for Mac terribly well, but check if you can find the Macros listed. You may need to enable them -- that's either in the Developer tab or somewhere in the preferences.
  • I found the macros and added the zotero.dot template, but when I try and run them it says that word can't communicate with zotero. Any other ideas?
  • can you now see the add-on tab, though? Try re-installing the Word component from the Cite tab of Zotero then, that should do it.
  • Finally got it the add ins tab to appear, but I have to open the template manually. I think the zotero.dot file was supposed to be in the templates folder under User Content, instead of the Startup file.

Now I'm just getting the error message that word can't communicate with zotero.
  • Nope, still not working even after reinstalling component and restarting word
  • Uninstalled and then reinstalled zotero stand alone and everything now works fine.

Trouble shooting tip: try uninstalling and reinstalling before you spend hours messing with files you don't understand.
