Bibliography

  • I am adding my real citations to a fake document and generating a bibliography like crazy. Currently I am trying to add all the ones I know I have in my document and see if one turns up and adds an error or makes it stop working. Right now I am up to 7 citations and it is adding ion a different document fine.
  • i tried first 2 pages. a middle page and the last page separate. None of them would allow a bibliography page
  • all very frustrating. Could you provide both a debug ID (that cover trying to insert a bibliography) and a report ID (right afterwards):

    1346553364 debug
  • Dan -- could you check if there's anything useful in there?
  • I tried to pick apart a little piece at a time and move page by page by cut and paste to a word document and that wont work. even with a half of a page

i am not sure what you are telling me. I have 34 footnotes in my document they just wont move to a bib. I have made some errors occasionally but pretty sure that this is not that simple. I can create a bib in another unrelated doc.
  • That was for me
  • Roger standing by. At this point you can tell me to stand on my head on the edge of a tall building holding a long metal pole in a lightning storm and I will do it no questions asked.
  • Did alt-F9 make dgibberish appear where the references should be in the text? If not maybe field codes were removed. (Maybe this guess is too obvious.)
  • the difference between alt f9 and reg is "bibliography" and " Zotero_ Bibl {custom:[]}CSL BIBLIOGRAPHY" but neither produce a bibliography
  • what does it mean the field codes were removed?
  • I can create a bib with another document. What do I need to do to get them back?
  • That's a very good point DWL, might well be it:
@mjbates: if you press alt+F9 in your document, all the citations should "expand" to show a lot of other information. You can try this in one of the fresh, working documents to see what you're looking for.

Does that happen in your big, currently broken document?
If not, the citations are no longer linked to Zotero in any way. The most likely way this may have occurred in your case is in passing the document back and forth between you advisor and yourself. If they, e.g. used different software (Pages, LibreOffice, GoogleDocs) to open the document, that would have disappeared all those. There's also a "Remove Field Codes" button, though you'd have to press that and the OK the warning message, so that seems less. likely
  • And, if that is indeed the case, the only way to fix it is, unfortunately, to re-insert the citations.
  • so can i back space it out and re-incert and it will re- engage
  • yup, that'll do. You should track down what happened so it doesn't re-occur. 34 footnotes are pretty quick, but if this happens with 340, that'd be rather disastrous, I imagine.
  • To do this you should first print a copy of the version that doesn't have a bibliography but has the in-text citations. Second, save as a copy of your original (although flawed) document. You should work with this copy.

If this was a numbered style (Vancouver) , 34 references could be completed in 15 to 20 minutes. I've never done this with an author-date style but I expect it will take a little longer. At the same time, I recommend a bit of proofreading and light editing. You are sure to find an error or two.
