citations appear incorrectly for Chicago style

I use Chicago Style (author-date) in Microsoft Office 2013 with Zotero. It works fine for most of the times, but I keep encountering some odd situations. I'll use one book (Is Taiwan Chinese? by Melissa J. Brown) to demonstrate my problem. Instead of (Brown 2004), the citation appears as (M. Brown 2004) or (M. J. Brown 2004). Similar problems happened with a few other references. I have tried: 1)delete the item in Zotero and re-add it, 2)manually enter the author's name in different ways, but nothing worked.

What's the problem here and how can I fix it? This error only happened to some references, but I couldn't find the pattern.
  • This is most likely the result of 1) having more than one record of that item each with different degrees of author name completeness; or 2) having multiple works by that author with different name completeness.

Chicago style demands that the most complete author name available be used -- so all entries authored by her should be entered Melissa J. Brown and not M. J. Brown -- even if the article, chapter, etc. lists her as M. Brown.

If needed I can post the CMoS rule location as proof.
