Adding Issue

Unable to add to a group library despite having admin settings.
  • we'd want more details on this: how are you adding the item, what type of item, have you tried adding an item using the green plus sign, have you made sure you've synced successfully since getting admin rights? (as well as anything else that might be relevant).
  • I've tried adding the item on Zotero Standalone and on the web browser. The item is a journal article, and I've tried both the green plus sign and the File -> New Item -> Journal Article way. I know I synced once without admin rights, and I tried syncing again but it didn't take as long/didn't seem to be registering everything. Is there a way to ensure I've synced?
  • By "on the web browser" -- do you mean here on zotero.org? That would be very odd.

If that's not what you mean, could you try there?

If that's what you mean -- when you click on https://www.zotero.org/groups/ under that groups name and "Group Library," do you see options to "Manage Profile" "Manage Members" "Manage Library"?
  • Sorry, I meant Zotero for Chrome (adding the article that way).

I do have all of those options on zotero.org.
  • and presumably you can add and article there, correct?

When you try adding with the green plus sign in Standalone, what exactly happens? If you don't have editing right, the green plus is greyed out and not-clickable. Is that what you're seeing?

In Zotero Standalone, when you hover over the green round sync icon at the top right, what does it say?
  • I can add an article there (and in Zotero Standalone) in my own library, but my addition isn't showing up in my group library. It pops up as "adding to ARISE library," but it doesn't show up in the actual library.

The green plus sign in Standalone isn't greyed necessarily, but it is not clickable. When I try to add by File -> New Item -> Journal Article, it pops up with a warning message saying "You cannot make changes to the currently selected collection."

The sync arrow says "Last sync: 2 hours ago."
  • And when you add something to the group online and sync, do you see it appear locally?
Also, any sense on since when you have been group administrator?
  • Yes, it appears in my own library in Standalone but not the group's. Is that what you mean?

I was given admin access yesterday, so perhaps it hasn't activated yet?
  • no, I mean -- if you create an item online, on zotero.org, in the group, does that sync to your Zotero Standalone? Settings take effect immediately after the next successful sync.
  • I don't think I have the capability to add items on zotero.org in the group, I can only view the current library, there's no option to add items.
  • @Dan -- before we waste too much time here, could you take a look at the admin status?
  • cviccora is an admin.
  • OK, if you go to the group library page on zotero.org (the URL should be something like https://www.zotero.org/groups/123456/items except with a different number), you should see a green plus sign at the top left. Click that to create a new item. Create any new item.

Then sync Zotero Standalone by clicking on the round green sync arrow. After it has finished circling, hove over it and make sure it says something like "Last Sync: seconds ago"

See if the new item has showed up in your local copy of the library. If it has, now try, again, to create a new item locally.
  • Hi Adam, sorry I'm just circling back to this. The item I added on zotero.org showed up in Standalone when I added it this way. However, I'm still not able to add articles from my browser (the icon will only show up if I'm on the Zotero group library page). I've de-installed and reinstalled the Chrome extension.
  • Let's take this one by one. So you can now manually ad items online and they sync to Standalone. Excellent.

Next thing to try would be to check whether you can now manually add items in Standalone (with the green plus sign) and they sync back to the group library. If that's the case, then all group and sync functionality is fine and the only thing left to check is what's not working with your Chrome connector.
  • Still unable to add items in Standalone in my group libraries, although I can add items to my personal library. So still the same issue as before.

So I'm thinking there's still a larger issue with syncing. Thanks!
  • So the green plus is still unclickable when you're in the group library, correct?

@Dan - any ideas on this?
  • Correct, I can't make any changes to the group library.
  • sorry, I'm no longer interested in helping:
    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/55197/unable-to-sync-zotero-standalone/#Item_3
I do this in my spare time
  • I appreciate your help so far - is there anyone else that can help? Trying to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible.

    Thank you!

The item I added on zotero.org showed up in Standalone when I added it this way.
@cviccora, just to confirm. When you did this, you added an item on zotero.org to the group library (not your personal online library), and it also showed up in Standalone in the group library?

@adamsmith, could it be a storage issue, since group storage allowance is based on the admin account?

Actually, @cviccora, could you check https://www.zotero.org/settings/storage and see whether your total Usage is higher than or near your Quota? (or check with the previous admin whether their quota was higher than yours)
  • @Rintze, correct. The item did show up in Standalone in the group library.

It looks like my Usage is only at 2.2%, so I should be good. In terms of the admin account, the admin storage is at 2.8 MB out of 300 MB.

Does that help? Let me know if you'd like more info. Thanks!

Yes, storage space shouldn't affect this.

Are you saying you can't make any changes to items in the group? E.g., if you select an item and go to the right-hand pane, you can't click on any fields?

I refreshed your group membership. Try syncing again and see if anything changed.
  • Thanks for the refresh - it looks like I have the ability to add to the group library now.

I'm getting this message now: "The group 'ARISE' has reached its Zotero File Storage quota. Some files were not uploaded. Other Zotero data will continue to sync to the server. The group owner can increase the group's storage capacity from the storage settings section on zotero.org."

Since that's a storage issue, I think it can be resolved by increasing capacity. Thanks so much for your help, everyone!
