freeing attachments linked to an item

I have a situation where many pdf files are wrongly attached to a book. Each of these attachments is a separate book/ article etc. How do I get them back in my library as free standing files?

    you can just drag them between items -- this is a bit finicky, but if you look closely, you can see where the item you're dragging is placed (the line is a bit indented when you attach it).
