Trouble with references in the text

Hello,

I have a trouble with my references in the text when I put two pages. Example, instead of: "Dupont, 2000, p. 42-43" as I have written in the box, Zotero writes: Dupont, 2000, p. 42?43.
I have tried different french styles (Revue Française de Sociologie, Economie et statistique) but I have the same problem. Please, someone could help me ?

Also, my Zotero is very slowly when it inserts or changes references. Maybe is linked ?

    I have installed Zotero standalone because I use Google Chrome. The version is Zotero 4.0.28.

    could you switch to a different citation style for testing. Say APA?

    For speed, how large (number of pages) is your document?

    Sorry, it takes me along time because Zotero is very slow and needs a few repetitions of order before it executes it.

    But with APA 6th ed, it seems working !
    But the style doesn't correspond with the exigences of my PhD...

    My document contents around 270 pages.

    slowness is currently expected in large documents. I'd recommend authoring in chapters until you're ready to put it all together.

    So what's going on is that French styles use a special, so-called "non-breaking" hyphen for page and locator ranges. Could you check if you can follow these instructions: http://wordribbon.tips.net/T000029_Inserting_a_Non-Breaking_Hyphen.html
    to insert such a hyphen into your document in Word? If not, the problem is likely the font you're using.

    FWIW, this does work correctly for me.

    I'm very desappointed.
    This instructions to insert special characters work in my text but not in my Zotero's box. Moreover, I have tried with both of hyphen (french keyboard azerty) and others special characters as / : ; . + _ * all of them are recognized by Zotero expect - !!! I also switch my keyboard in english and Zotero still doesn't recognyze the hyphen...
    What do you mean by "the font you're using" ?

    Thanks for yours advices, I have tried Zotero in a new document and it works well. Now, I know that I have to use it by chapter.

    Concerning 42-43 v 42?43

    Isn't that likely an issue related to character encoding of hyphen em-dash en-dash breaking or not and the settings on the user's machine / word processor. I'm on a tablet for a few hours so I can't look at the styles code. I suspect that there might be differences in the page punctuation mark across the styles. The"?" may appear because the user's chosen font and encoding are combining to insert a placeholder character.

    The slowness isn't likely related to the character issue.

    By font I mean the font you're using in Word--not all fonts support all characters, so the reason you may be getting the ? there is that the font you're using can't interpret that character.

    I'm not quite clear I understand from what you write whether you have tried to insert the non-breaking hyphen in Word (not in the Zotero add-on). Did you? Does it show up correctly? If it does, the font isn't the issue and we'd have to look for another cause.

    Yes, I have tried to insert the non-breaking hyphen in Word and it works.

    I have also tried the APA style and the hyphen appears in my references.

    In my bibliography (at the end of the document), the hyphen appears in all the references with RFS style :
    WYNNE B., 1992, « Public understanding of science research: new horizons or hall of mirrors? », Public Understanding of Science, 1, 1, p. 37‑43.
    VAUJANY DE F.-X., 2006, « Pour une théorie de l’appropriation des outils de gestion : vers un dépassement de l’opposition conception-usage », Management & Avenir, n° 9, 3, p. 109‑126.

    I hope this informations are more clear to understant my trouble.

    OK, so the font is fine.
    How about when you insert a citation with the RFS style in a new document -- does the hyphen in citations work there or is it also a question mark?

    In a new document, I have also a question mark instead of the hyphen in the citation in the text. Moreover, in the bibliography at the end of the new document, I have also a question mark...

    sorry, I'm trying to think about what the problem could be, but I'm somewhat out of ideas, particularly since this works for me. Which Word version are you using?

    Thanks for your compassion.

    Now, I'm using Word 2010.
    I've written my PhD and used Zotero with at least 3 different computers. I don't remember that I have the problem before this last one...

    In the hope of figuring out which part of a style causes this, could you try

    and see if you get the same problem? After that, I can likely give you a custom version of the RFS style that will fix this for you, although I'm not sure I'll be able to understand how to fix the underlying problem.

    I have tried with both of them in a new document, I still have the question mark in the citations in the text and in the bibliography.

    I have installed RFS french a new time but I have the same problem. I have also tried RFS english and it works...

    It's not a real fix, but it'll work:
    Download the style from

    (right-click, save link as). Then install the downloaded style from the "Cite-->Styles" tab of the Zotero preferences.

    I honestly have no idea what's causing this problem and I'm not really sure how to fix it without being able to reproduce it, but we'll keep an eye out.
