Trouble with citation in text

Hi,

I'm a new Zotero user. I have a problem with citation in the text. For example, I would like, in APA style, to insert a reference such as (Tissot, 2000), but it inserts only (Tissot, s.d.). I don't seem to be able to add the date of the edition. Can you please help ? I specify that I've selected the APA style before inserting the reference.
Thank you in advance for your answer.

  • your item in Zotero doesn't have a date, otherwise APA would print it.
  • Yes, it does on the publication category. I also added the year in the edition field. But still nothing. I get the same result. I've tried with multiple references imported (in RiS format).
  • The date needs to be in the field "Date" -- That's right below the "Pages" field for journal articles,e.g.

Where are you importing the RIS from?
  • Well, I looked everywhere for a field date. I couldn't find it. I'll check again. The ris are from the RERO General catalogue (every library in Switzerland). I noticed I could export in ris from there and then Zotero just imports it quite well.
  • I can't get RIS from RERO (how do you get to it?) but Rero does support regular Zotero import and that works beautifully for me:
    http://help.opac.rero.ch/de/cc/o/zotero.html
    including date.
  • Ah, I didn't know that. It's my first day with zotero. I'll check that out on Monday, 'cause I installed it on my computer at the office.

As for your question, I did the following :

When selected a title into rero, in the "details" field there is a button to the right called "action" (in my French version). Click on this actions button and choose the last category to export the chosen reference. Then, with zotero open, just double click on the ris file and it will automatically imported in zotero.
  • yes, the Rero Explore RIS export seems to handle dates incorrectly (They put them in the publication field, they should be in a separate date or year field, which Zotero would import correctly).

FWIW, while Rero Explore will also import directly into Zotero, if you're just looking at books, the regular catalog will work better.
  • Ah, ok. So shoul I try adding the date manually ? Which I regular catalogue ? I'm finishing my PhD soon, so I have a whole different references from different catalogues (rero mostly, but also some 200 guidebooks from library of congress etc.).
  • you should really mainly be using Zotero import with the Zotero icon, i.e.
    https://www.zotero.org/support/getting_stuff_into_your_library#web_translators

Both rero catalogs and the LoC (and really most sites) will import dates correctly and you won't have to do anything manually.
Where the date does import incorrectly, though, yes, you should fix it manually in Zotero (not in the Word document).
(The regular RERO catalog is at http://opac.rero.ch/gateway )
  • Ok thanks. I'll try these on Monday. Have a great week-end !
