Style Error: [onderstepoort-journal-of-veterinary-research.csl]

The in-line citations does not organise themselves alphabetically. I am not exactly sure where to change this in the code in visual CSL editor. Please help... and thank you in advance!

  • You would need a new sort node under the inline citations and use "author-short" as sorting key, cf. documentation of CSL. I couldn't find the rule in the style guide. Where did you found the rule about the alphabetically order of inline citations?
  • Onderstepoort JVS uses Harvard reference style ( http://www.ojvr.org/index.php/ojvr/pages/view/original ) (scroll to bottom). In the style guide a the bottom of p.3 ( http://openjournals.net/files/Ref/HARVARD2009%20Reference%20guide.pdf ), where several authors are listed at once, the authors are listed alphabetically.
  • Okay, thank you for the information. I will improve the ordering for this style in the repository.
  • Thank you, much appreciated!!!
  • Okay, the update should be available now (normally your style is updated automatically).
  • Good day
Just noted a few errors in [onderstepoort-journal-of-veterinary-research] Citation Style (Onderstepoort JVS uses Harvard reference style ( http://www.ojvr.org/index.php/ojvr/pages/view/original ) (scroll to bottom). In the style guide a the bottom of p.3 ( http://openjournals.net/files/Ref/HARVARD2009%20Reference%20guide.pdf )

    Problems:

1.) When there are multiple works by the same author cited at the same place in-line, the author name is repeated the second time as well. E.g, instead correctly citing:
    Text Text (McMahon 1975; 1973),
    it places the citation as
Text Text (McMahon 1975; McMahon 1973)

2.) When there are multiple works by the same author in the same year, Zotero sometimes adds (a) and (b) next to the dates and sometimes, for some reason, includes the author's initials. E.g:
    Text Text (R. Lydekker 1885; R. Lydekker 1885)
    And sometimes:
Text Text (Falconer 1868b; Falconer 1868a)

Bibliography for citations above (in case it might be relevant to solving these problems)

Falconer, H., 1868a, Description of the plates of the Fauna Antiqua Sivalensis, C. Murchison (ed.), R. Hardwicke, London.

Falconer, H., 1868b, Palæontological Memoirs and Notes of the Late Hugh Falconer: With a Biographical Sketch of the Author, C. Murchison (ed.), R. Hardwicke, London.

Lydekker, R., 1885, Catalogue of fossil mammalia. Part ii. Containing the order ungulata, suborder Artiodactyla, Taylor and Francis. Printed by order of the Trustees, London.

Lydekker, R., 1885, Catalogue of the Remains of Siwalik Vertebrata Contained in the Geological Department of the Indian Museum, Calcutta: Mammalia, Superintendent of Government Printing, Calcutta.

McMahon, T.A., 1975, 'Allometry and Biomechanics: Limb Bones in Adult Ungulates', The American Naturalist 109, 547–563.

McMahon, T.A., 1973, 'Size and shape in biology.', Science 179, 1201–1204.
  • Okay, I can correct the no. 1) by adding something like 'collapse="year"'. However, I cannot reproduce no. 2). It would be okay to add initial if that helps to disambiguate, but that does not seem to be the case here.
  • I'd still expect 2) is related to first names entered differently in Zotero, potentially for yet another Lydekker reference.
  • Thank you zuphilip and adamsmith!

You were right. I deleted the Lydekker references and redid them, which sorted out the problem. Please could let me know when issue 1 is fixed?

    On a slightly different note:
Is there any chance the [onderstepoort-journal-of-veterinary-research.csl] style can be copied 'as is' to a new style called Journal of the South African Veterinary Association? Both these journals use exactly the same reference format and are at the same publisher.( http://www.jsava.co.za/index.php/jsava/pages/view/original ) I like Zotero a lot and would like more of my coworkers to use it but I am afraid if they don't see their journal in the style repository they won't make further effort...

Thank you zuphilip and adamsmith (and others) for the good work you are doing!

    Regards

  • Brand -- I contacted AOSIS (Trudie) through the email you gave me last summer, and she promised to get back to me but never did. I can try again, but we'd much rather do this in batch then add individual copies/dependent styles.
  • I will fix issue 1.
  • Thanks adamsmith and zuphilip!

Sorry, i'm not that tech savvy - what does it mean to do this in batch rather than individual copies?

    B
  • for all AOSIS journals, automatically and based on a spreadsheet rather than manually one by one.
  • btw. zuphilip's fix for the style is now live.

Update your copy of the style by clicking "Update Now" in the General tab of the Zotero preferences.

Styles also update automatically within 24hs for Zotero 4.0+
In an existing document, you may have to switch to a different style and back for the changes to take effect once the style is updated.
