Zotero Refresh not working

I am trying to make updates to several of my references. I have made changes in the zotero database, but when I do the refresh, the changes are not coming through. I am running standalone with office plugins. I have tried this both with the Windows and Mac versions.

Thanks
  • how about if you test them in a new document? Works there?
  • Yes. It works in a new document.
  • if you press alt+F9 (may be alt+F9+FN on Mac) in Word, you can see the entire field codes that Zotero inserts for all citations.
This will look messy, but for each citation you will, among other info, find the corresponding item URI. Something like www.zotero.org/30999/items/12345
Check if that's the same for the item that's not updating in your document and the one that looks correctly in the old one.
If they're note the same, post both of them here.
  • They are different. The original document (that is not updating) has http://zotero.org/users/local/jfWwQUtD/items/KZI5QPNA

and the new one has http://zotero.org/users/local/4EXi7W6B/items/3837Z2UI
  • this seems like they're both inserted on computers that have never been synced to Zotero, yet you say you've tried this on Mac and Windows. How do you transport your library between those?
  • I have a VM of windows and share the directory with the zotero files to it.

OK, that's not the problem then -- there's not much other that I can tell you that the item you're trying to refresh and the one you've edited aren't the same Zotero item.
Either you have a duplicate item in Zotero (potentially you have deleted the original item in Zotero) or you at some point used export/import on your library.
If you do find the duplicate item, you can use Zotero's duplicate merge function, making sure to use the edited version as the master item during merge, and this will just work.

If that item is no longer in your library, I don't see an alternative to deleting and re-inserting all affected citations.

edit: you can actually search for the original item in your library by searching for
    KZI5QPNA
in the quick search bar in "All Fields and Tags" mode.
