view online of references

Dear Zotero,
I am new to Zotero and just downloaded Zotero for Firefox. I have tried to move some of my references from RefMan and Zotero group to my own library. When I copied references from other Zotero group, I firstly exported them to RefMan in RIS format and then imported them to my library. For all of these references, when I right click on the mouse, there is no icon for "view online" category available. Could you please let me know what is the reason. For other references that I moved directly from RefMan, there is this icon. And when I double click on the reference in the middle column, the online article appears automatically. Could you please let me know what the reason is? Thanks a lot.

  • In order to have the "View Online" option on right click, a Zotero item must have (at least) one of the following:

    - an attachment with a URL
    - a DOI
    - a URL in the URL field starting with http:// or https://

Apparently your method of transfering items loses one or all of these.

When transfering items between a Zotero group and your library, I'd recommend joining the group. After sync, you can then simply drag&drop items between groups and my library as you like.
  • Thanks a lot for your answer. What exactly should I do to sync? In the Actions icon, I have clicked on "Preferences", and in the Sync icon, the Settings tab, I have set up everything. However, when I drag and drop one of the reference from the group to my library, it is a link for the group, not the reference itself. I would like to the reference itself. Any additional steps need to be done?

  • look at https://www.zotero.org/groups/
Maybe that helps clarify? It looks like you're dragging from the group's page on zotero.org to your library. This should all happen in the software (though you need to have joined the group for it to be possible).
  • I am a membership of the group but I only have right to view, not edit. What exactly should I do to make it "happen in the software"? Thanks.
  • are you seeing the group at the bottom of you Firefox app the way it's shown here:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/groups#interact_with_groups_through_the_zotero_client
(sorry, had meant to link to that one before, the above was the wrong link).
  • Thanks. The new link is very helpful. I do not see any group libraries. What is the reason? I am a member of the group.
  • either you haven't synced successfully since joining the group or your groups are collapsed (there's a small triangle next to "Group Libraries" that you can click in that case).
  • Now I know the problem. For the group, I registered long time ago. Now I registered using another account. Can I change my new account to the old one? Thanks.
  • Not quite sure what you mean by that -- you can obviously just log in and/or switch your sync information to your old account. Otherwise I'm not clear what you mean by "switching".
  • when I was invited to the group, I registered using my working email address. After more than one year, I forgot that I have registered in Zotero and I registered again using my private email address. So, basically I should have two accounts. How could I change the newer registered account to the old one?
  • You can easily merge your items simply by putting in the old user information and letting sync take care of that. You can then delete your new acccount under https://www.zotero.org/settings/account (make sure you're deleting the right one).
Is that what you mean by "Change the account to the old one"?
  • I am a bit slow here. Could you please let me know how exactly to put in the old user information and let sync take care of it? Thanks.
  • you make sure you have everything from your new account synced to the Zotero your working with (i.e. the FF app in your case I believe), then you go to the sync tab of the preferences and put in your old username (or e-mail) and password.
You'll get a warning, which you should click OK on and then you sync. This will merge the content of your two accounts.
  • Thanks a lot. It works. May I ask another question? How can I stop receiving emails from Zotero forum?
