typo in 'tour'; report 1902961202; icon inactive;

New user; tried to report a typo in the online tour, you have "formated" for "formatted" (in a yellow popup window that appears and disappears fairly quickly).

Tried to report that, got a javascript error box that generated error 1902961202

Other things:
-- no Zotero icon ever appears in the URL address field.
-- The red Z in the lower right hand corner of the window does nothing; I open and close Zotero via the /Tools/Addons/Zotero menu only, which is awkward.

Just started, obviously. Intel Mac, OSX 10.4.11, Kinesis Classic keyboard.

Didn't find any of these issues by using the Search box
  • Aha, I was using the Search box at the top of the page next to the Welcome/Settings line. Now I've clicked the word Search under Forums and that opens up a Search box that, duh, searches the Forums instead and I see the icon problem a lot.

I'll dig through the other reports on that.
  • AHA -- re the Status Bar icon, the red Z in the lower right corner of the page -- solved, for me. FF 3.0.5, OSX 10.4.11, Mac Mini.

There is about 15 or so pixels worth of extra white space to the left of the Z icon in the Status Bar (the excess blank space is wider than the Z icon).

IF I click on the farthest left pixel column of the Z, or anywhere in something like six or seven pixels of blank space left of the Z, that works to open and close the Zotero window.

Clicking anywhere else within the actual Z icon does nothing at all.

    So it's just misaligned.

If I hover the arrow cursor along the status bar, I get the little textbox explanations popping up for the other icons there, but no cursor change at all for the Z icon
  • The status bar icon shouldn't be misaligned by default, but it's possible another extension is throwing off the alignment. You might try disabling other extensions with status bar icons to see if you can find the problem.
  • I'd already turned off all extensions, restarted, enabled Zotero and restarted.
    No change.

I've now tried changing from the "Z" to the "zotero" icon and report the same offset; the click works from a letter-width left of the "z" through to the "r" but not over the "o"

Still no Navigation bar icon at all in any of the pages checked (checking Amazon mostly)

I have Reset Translators and Styles and reloaded the Amazon page.
I have used Check Database Integrity -- no errors found.
I can do the next step:

"make a new thread in the Site Translators category and provide the name of the site, a URL of an entry that is not working, and any other information you see as relevant."

But since it's "all URLs" I'll wait a day or so and see if I can find any mention of this elsewhere in the comments unless you have any specific steps you'd like me to take.
Happy to do any debugging you suggest, give me cookbook directions though.
  • PS -- in the Navigation toolbar I do of course see the red Z at left side _when_ I'm at a Zotero page, the one that pops up the warnings that this site does not supply identity information and does not encrypt. (Changes with each site visited.)

I'm sure that's not the Navigation icon described in the docs. The only icons to the right of the URL are the "Subscribe to this page... " and "Bookmark this page" icons that Firefox supplies.
  • One more-- the change from the red Z to the "zotero" for the Status Bar icon in the Preferences does not stick -- the setting in the Preferences stays set to "zotero" but the actual icon is showing up as the red Z when I go to new pages not previously visited.
  • I'd already turned off all extensions, restarted, enabled Zotero and restarted. No change.
Are you using the default Firefox theme or a custom theme? If a custom one, switch to the default.

You don't get a book icon on this page (after the page has finished loading)?

If not, generate debug output for the page load and send it to support@zot....org, referencing this thread.

Yeah, that's just the zotero.org favicon—nothing to do with the Zotero software.

By "new pages" do you mean new Firefox windows? The status bar icon has no relation to the web page being viewed.

If you change the setting and restart Firefox, do you still see just the "Z" in the status bar?

Also, I assume you changed this setting initially (since the default is the full word)?
  • OK -- still "Hank" now logging in as "Hank2" (new userid -- my password didn't work this morning after I changed my Theme!)

So -- yes, I was using a nonstandard Theme (Whitehart 3.4) and am now back to the Default. As soon as I changed to Default theme, the Zotero icon appeared in the Amazon page navigation bar correctly.

After that I couldn't log back in to Zotero any longer. The password reset appears to work, I get the email and create a new password, but then I get "Invalid Credentials Provided" -- been through that 3x, waiting in between, gave up -- so I'm back having created a new user)

One other EARLIER oddity I only realized late last night (while still using the nondefault Theme) -- adding Zotero had caused my Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar to disappear (wouldn't show whether toggled on or off). I got that toolbar back by going to about:config and changing this from the default setting to "true"

    dom.disable_window_open_feature.toolbar;true

and now I can see the Bookmarks toolbar again. No clue why, just guessed at what to change.

Now using Default theme; the toolbar toggles on and off as it should, with this setting

Uninstalling all Extensions did not change that by the way.

    --------------------------

If I have to choose, I'll stay with the Whitehart theme and lose Zotero until you can support the Theme -- I've got old eyes and rather low-contrast vision even with the screen fiddled as much as I can; Firefox's default looks gray-on-gray and uncomfortably close to unreadable; that's why I'm using Whitehart theme.

I'll just back off a while and see how this goes, unless there's something specific you'd like me to change and test for you. But I'll leave Zotero installed and the theme set to Default for a few days and see what develops here.

PS, I notice IngentaConnect is setting up something much like Zotero; will files transfer?
  • I can reproduce the issue with the status bar icon with Whitehart installed, though, as you note, with the default setting all but the 'o' are clickable, and Cmd-Shift-Z still works.

A theme shouldn't have any effect whatsoever on site logins as far as I know.

The Bookmarks Toolbar displays fine for me with Whitehart installed, without changing that setting.

If you're having weird issues that others can't reproduce, you might want to create a new Firefox profile, install just Zotero and Whitehart, and see if you're still having trouble. If that fixes things, you can install other extensions one-by-one, make sure everything is still working, and then transfer your Firefox and extension data over.
  • OK, I can try a new profile (still can't get my original login here to work by the way).

One last note from this current set,

    > see just the "Z" in the status bar?
    > Also, I assume you changed this setting initially (since the default is the full word)?

Nope, for me it opened up the other way. Odd. The "Z" is what I first saw in my Status bar, I hadn't touched the settings when I posted this -- I didn't even know there was the alternative of the spelled-out-name til after I'd posted this inquiry.

Do any of the Firefox security-related choices and settings affect any of this? (Java, Javascript, cookies, correct Referer, anything NoScript sets, AdBlock, and so forth?)
