√ Enable Quick Format Citation dialog to recognize foreign characters in MS Word Plugin

Unlike the classic view, Quick Format Citation dialog in MS Word Plugin does not recognize foreign (Asian) characters. Can you enable it to read foreign (or Asian) characters?
  • I'm not sure what you mean by "does not recognize". How so? It's just a text field. You can enter Asian characters like any others.
  • Yes, I can enter Asian characters, but they don't function as a search string. For example, when you type "john" in the Quick Format box, all items with the word "john" in any of the fields will turn up. That doesn't happen with an Asian word. I have to convert to the Classic pane for the search function to work properly with an Asian search string.
  • when you type "john" in the Quick Format box, all items with the word "john" in any of the fields will turn up.
that's not actually the case. The quick format bar only searches title, creator, and year. I have no non-Latin items here to test, but is that the problem?
  • (Ok, I shouldn't have said "any field", but the problem would persist even if either the title or creator field had the word "john" in it in my example.)

Yes, I suspect non-latin characters in the field may be the problem.

    Works fine for me:

    1) Create a new item and make its title "漢字".

    2) Go to Word, go to insert a citation, and paste "漢字" into the Quick Format Bar.

The item shows up for me in the list, and I can select it.
  • Could this have something to do with unicode composition again? If you re-type whatever title/author does not show up in Zotero, does it work then?
  • I found a quick fix while trying different things: after completing a search word (at this point, the Quick Format pane doesn't show you any candidates), pressing the spacebar does the trick. This behavior is definitely different from when you're completing latin character-based word, but as long as it works..
  • I observe the same behaviour as wonblee: When searching for an entry using Chinese characters, the search is only triggered after I enter a blank space.

While the blank space workarround is working fine me, it still is a obstacle for new users. At least I didn't figure it out before I read wonblee's comment.

Dan, do you have to enter a blank space too, or is the search triggered immediatly? Could that depend on the IME used?
