Different problems updating Zotero

Whenever I open Zotero, I get a message which says "The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Zotero running on your computer, and then restart Zotero to try again." I'm currently running Zotero 4.0.17. When I go to check for updates, I get a screen which says "Downloading Zotero" and a bar with "Connecting to the update server" written under it, but nothing is happening. I do sync zotero between a couple of different computers, but I don't think there are any other copies of Zotero currently running on this computer. Can you help me figure out how to upgrade?

Also, until yesterday, everything was still working fine despite getting this error message every time I open Zotero. But starting yesterday, it no longer shows me the icons in the web address window which allow me to download a citation from the web and attach a PDF of the article.

    4.0.17, if that's really what you mean, is 1.5 years old. You should download the latest version from zotero.org.
