Zotero Standalone extension unavailable

Hello,

I've recently installed Zotero Standalone and the Chrome extension as required for a graduate class I'm taking. However, the "Z" tile vanishes from the extension bar at the top of my browser window as soon as I finish adding the extension to Chrome. When I go to the Chrome extensions management section it tells me that Zotero Standalone is currently unavailable. Deletion and reinstall have not helped the problem. Any solutions?

Cheers,
-Ell.

There wouldn't be a "Z" tile in Chrome except to tell you how Zotero works on first run, so the fact that that disappears by itself doesn't mean it's not working.

Could you confirm you're not seeing a book icon in the URL bar here?
    http://www.worldcat.org/title/wealth-of-nations-books-i-iii/oclc/8424650&referer=brief_results
  • There's no book icon, nope. I did discover completely by accident that if I right click a page there's an option for "Save page to Zotero," however, and I can open Zotero as if it were a regular computer program from my desktop, so I guess... problem fixed?
  • no, "Save page to Zotero" doesn't actually save most of the relevant information.
Just to be clear -- this is what you should be seeing:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/getting_stuff_into_your_library#web_translators
If you're not, please provide a debug ID from the Chrome connector for loading or reloading the worldcat page above:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output#zotero_connectors_chrome_and_safari
  • I definitely don't see those icons. To be clear I can see icons for other extensions (AdBlock, etc.).

The debug ID I got was D969330938.

    Thanks!
  • There doesn't appear to be any attempt to load the WorldCat page in that debug output.
  • To be clear I can see icons for other extensions (AdBlock, etc.).
Well, but this just sounds like you're looking in the wrong place. In Chrome (for now) the icon appears within the address bar, not in the toolbar with other extension icons.
  • Apologies, I missed that part. The new debug code is D1690133440.

So now I can see the folder in the corner, but it's not there for all webpages. My professor gave us the understanding that Zotero would work for any webpage- does it only work for academic or library-related websites?

Also- the toolbar with the extension icons is in the same line as the "favorites" star in the address bar, so I've always considered them sort of the same thing; sorry for the confusion.
  • You only get the icon (folder, book, etc.) for sites supported by Zotero. That's not just academic sites (it includes e.g. amazon, The New York Times, The Guardian, etc.) but it won't appear on all sites.

For any site where you don't get the icon in the URL bar, you can use the "Save as Zotero Snapshot" option on right-click that you previously discovered.
  • Adam,
It's me again with another challenge using the Zotero bibliographic software.

I do not see the "article" icon in the web browser. I saw it yesterday and used it to add several sources to my research. Today it's NOT there. I've restarted Zotero, my computer, and all open tabs. Did I miss an update or something?
