Lost References

I have been putting references into a file this afternoon, however when i closed and reopened the file to continue, the referencing began again at number 1 (i was up to 230....)
Is there any way to rescue this or do i just need to begin again?
I am using Zotero Standalone

How can i prevent this from occuring again
  • Unfortunately, I don't think there's much of a chance of rescuing them.

Which word processor did you use? With what file extension (.doc, .docx .odt, .rtf) did you save the file?
  • Thanks for the reply Adam.. Using Word 2007. and saved these in .doc....
  • I don't think we have ever seen this before. The main reason this would happen would be if you save in a format that doesn't support Word fields (.odt, .rtf) or if you intermittently open the file in software that doesn't support word fields (LibreOffice, Google Docs).

Have you tried changing to a different citation style (one with author-date citations like American Psychological) to make sure the connection of the references to Zotero is actually gone?
  • Gave this a go and managed to reference up to 54.. Is it possible there is some compatability issues, as i have another reference managing software also installed?
  • It shouldn't be unless you use that software in the same document.

What do you mean by "gave this a go" -- what did you try and what happened?
  • i tried changing the reference style to American Psychological but it did not change the numbers to the references, but it did put the first 54 references in the bibliography.... I guess the connection between the numbers and reference is lost..
  • That's odd. If you press alt+F9. do you see a lot of code appearing where the references are?
  • No unfortunately not.. Only the page numbers alter to {PAGE \+ MERGEFORMAT}
  • Could you test if that happens again in a new document? Just insert a couple of citations, save, close, open again -- are those still active?
  • In a new document this is no problem and everything is working correctly.. im guessing there may have just been a glitch when it saved...

    Thanks for your assistance
    Dan
  • Even when we save and reopen the file.. sorry
  • I wish I could tell you what happened. As I said, I'm not aware of any other case where that occurred without any clear cause.
  • OK, thanks again for your time.. Hopefully it was just a one off!

    Best,
    Dan
