HTML on group discussions

I seem to be able to put html formatting when starting a new discussion in a group, but once I send it I see only plaintext. In addition, when I edit the discussion I no longer have the formatting toolbar - only a plaintext entry box. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug / unimplemented feature?
