password doens't save

hey I'm quite new to zotero.

I keep trying to enter my password in the sync tab in zotero, but every time i close the preferences it "forgets" the password.

When I open up the preferences again, the password is gone.

This also seems to make it impossible for my local zotero to sync with my online library.

my zotero doesn't seem to wanna sync if I do it manually either.

what should I do?
  • If you're using the Firefox version, could you try if (temporarily) disabling all other add-ons helps?
  • If that doesn't help, provide a Report ID.

Thank you so much for your answer!

I can't sync my library (the arrow spins forever), and I can't save my password under the sync tab.

This looks like a problem with the Firefox login manager. I'd be surprised if saved passwords worked on websites either. You'd have to ask in the Mozilla forums for help with that, but you could try (backing up and) deleting signons.sqlite in your Firefox profile directory and restarting Firefox. Security software on your system could also be interfering, so you could try disabling that.
  • Hi again, thank you for your quick and precise answer.

I have tried both suggestions now, and the problem is still the same. I am kindda lost - do you have alternative I can try?

    or,

will it help if I delete firefox and install it again?
will it help if I delete zotero and install it again? (and will my library get lost either way?)
will it help if I download the standalone version of Zotero?
will it help to make sure my computer software is up to date?

    Thank you,
    Sebastian Reinert Scheuer.
  • You can use the Reset Firefox feature — not sure exactly where that is, but you can Google it — which will create a new Firefox profile for you, copy your old bookmarks/cookies into it, and put everything else in your profile directory in an "Old Firefox Data" folder on your desktop. You can then copy the 'zotero' directory from there into the new profile directory and reinstall Zotero. You should then see your old data, and you can then try reentering your username and password in the preferences and syncing again.
  • (You should also make your own backup of your Zotero data directory before doing that, for good measure.)
