newbie help...
Just arrived here - thanks to the NYTimes article - and was flabbergasted: Z performs almost everything Uplib does, and just as a FF extension! Wonderful work, guys...
Can I just ask for your help on one topic, to help me set it in motion?
Given the range of journals I work on (App.Phys.Lett., Jou.Mag.Mag.Mat., Phys.Rev.B,....) I do not hope much for automatic recognition, but it isnt so important
(the only one recognized a bit was PRL, but the Zotero folder icon on the address bar, when clicked (I was in http://scitation.aip.org/dbt/dbt.jsp?KEY=PRLTAO&Volume=101&Issue=25) just reports a "select items" window with a lot of empty links)
No, what I'd like is very simple: given some kind of bibliographic info in a more-or-less readable format, e.g. (from http://scitation.aip.org/dbt/dbt.jsp?KEY=APPLAB&Volume=CURVOL&Issue=CURISS):
Generation of polychromatic radially and azimuthally polarized beams
T. Grosjean, M. Suarez, and A. Sabac
Appl. Phys. Lett. 93, 231106 (2008)
when I select it and generate a Zotero item from it, the tree root is the webpage where I took it (in this case, APL current issue), then there is a note (containing all the selected text), and another item which is again the APL current issue page.
This behaviour surprises me a bit: I was expecting instead the creation of a bibliographic item, with some heuristics to fill the title/author/... fields, and maybe (if e.g. the selected text contains a PDF link) a link to the paper. I know how difficult it is, so no problem if I have to fiddle the fields a bit.
But instead the creation of the described tree structure has nothing to do with a bibliographic entity!
Am I missing something? There is a way to do what I want to do?
thanks for any help...

This is an old discussion that has not been active in a long time. Instead of commenting here, you should start a new discussion. If you think the content of this discussion is still relevant, you can link to it from your new discussion.
1) Click Abstract, and then on the abstract page click the Zotero journal article icon in the address bar to save a full bibliographic item.
2) Select multiple items and choose "Download Citation(s) in: - EndNote ®". If you have the "Use Zotero for downloaded RIS/Refer files" preference enabled in the Zotero preferences, Zotero will automatically add the selected items to your library.
your first method is good, works for almost all the journals (except
Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials).
I didnt understand from the documentation that you have to go to the
page to gain the ability to use Z
concerning the second one, I don't have endnote (I live in Linux) - I'll try cb2bib
But returning to my original question, I'm now using the "new item" button to create a new Journal entry, then cut and paste the info.
One last question - if I may: I'd like to insert, once I created the new item entry, a link to the article (not a link to a downloaded local copy): how do I do it? Under "attachments" everything I do downloads a copy of the article, while I'd like just to attach the link.
Thank you!

I found it! I believe you were talking about some Zotero button, while instead is a button present in some Journals (just Scitation ones?)
Unfortunately, I find this button in the Abstract view - and this allows me to save as RIS and make it appear in Z, but I dont see it in any page displaying more than 1 article, say for example in the result window of some article search.

Endnote (or Refworks for that matter) export exists for most scholarly databases - Z's ability to read them is, as Dan points out, a helpful workaround in case something is wrong with the respective translator.
This does work very well for multiple articles, too:
Check the boxes next to the articles you want to select and, from the drop down menu "Chose action for selected articles" chose "download in Endnote (RIS)", click on "go" and all selected articles will be added to Zotero.
What's missing, damn I use it a lot, is just the PROLA archive: the search results do not allow the multiple article ref download (see http://prola.aps.org/search/query)

I notice at the bottom of the PROLA search page that Google Scholar is search partner. If you conduct a search with this engine then you get the ability to import multiple references. With the few tests I conducted I got the same articles in Google Scholar as PROLA. If you want to limit the search to what is found on PROLA include APS as an extra search item in your criteria.
Personally, to keep track of the latest articles in my subject field, I have RSS feeds for all the journals I regularly review. I check the feeds at least once a day. Any new articles, along with their abstracts, are presented. I review all abstracts and click on the links that take me to the corresponding 'abstract' page on the web. All I do then is click on the Zotero Import Icon in the navigation fields and the reference is added to my library. I am currently using NewsFox as my RSS reader as it integrates with FireFox reasonably well.
If I have the need to 'blanket search' on certain subjects I export from the search engine in RIS format and import into my library that way.

I really thank this community for the precious help...
