Crash while attempting to archive citations

Hello,
My standalone version Zotero crashed several times. Crashes occurred when, after sincyng the standalone and web-based version, I tried to archive newly downloaded citations from PubMed.

It says something about a "state check failed due to transaction in progress". I don't fully understand what it means. May be syncing was'n complete when I tryed to archive citations?

The last crash report number is: 1863537028

Following is the crash report.

[JavaScript Error: "Component returned failure code: 0x804b0036 (NS_ERROR_SOCKET_ADDRESS_IN_USE) [nsIServerSocket.init]" {file: "file:///home/germ/Descargas/Zotero_linux-x86_64/extensions/zoteroOpenOfficeIntegration@zotero.org/components/zoteroOpenOfficeIntegration.js" line: 83}]

  • start by updating to Zotero 4.0.26.1

Is your Zotero data folder in the default location, or do you have it in a custom location? If the latter, what location?

    Hello Adam,

Thanks for your answer. I am on GNU/Linux Debian 7.8 (last stable version). I prefer to download Zotero from the Debian repo. So, the Zotero version I use is the one found in the crash report.

Regarding the data folder, the path follows:
    /home/germ/.mozilla/firefox/60076pwx.default/zotero/storage.

Within the storage folder there are several sub-folders, each containing the .pdf file of the citation, and two hidden files: .zotero-ft-cache and .zotero-ft-info. These are text files containing info about the downloaded file.

If the crash refers to a bug in the Zotero version I'm using I will have to deal with it until Debian includes the new version in their packages. Anyway I found that the crash can be, at least partially, solved with a workaround: launching zotero from command line using bash.

    Thanks for your reply. Regards,

    Mendieta
  • yeah, I can't guarantee the current Zotero version will fix this, but 4.0.22 is more than half a year old and there have been dozens of bug fixes since, we just don't have the capacity to troubleshoot old versions.

Especially if this works from the command line, it's also possible it's a problem in the .deb build (which isn't provided by Zotero).

Personally, if the .deb maintainers are lagging behind so much, I'd very much recommend to not rely on that, but that's up to you.
  • Hello Adam,

Thank you for the reply. I downloaded and installed the latest version (4.0.26) from Zotero server. Although the problem still persists and I forgot to save the last crash log file, I think I have a hint on what happens. I was working with the standalone version of Zotero and a word processor and, at the same time, retrieving references using the web-based (Firefox) platform of Zotero. When I tried to see a reference either opening the standalone or the web-based platforms the programs crashed. This continued until I did the following:
    1) Close both platforms.
    2) Open the standalone platform from the command line. This will show all the references.
    3) Close the standalone platform and bash (command line editor).
    4) Issue the standalone platform from the iconified command (program menu).

I will try to reproduce the fault and send the crash message for further analysis.

    Best regards,

    Mendieta
  • Hello Again Adam,

I post new info regarding the crash. It is not only happening in the standalone platform but also in the web-based one. I don't know whether to call it a bug, since it happens when attempting to open both platforms at the same time (which is something desirable, except that one would like a to read a message shown in Zotero window telling to close one of the platforms instead of a crash, hehe).

Moreover the crash also happens if the following is done:
    1) Open a reference from the standalone platform using a pdf viewer.
    2) Close the standalone platform.
    3) Open the web-based platform.

Also, it happens if the 3 steps above begin with the web-based platform.

Following are the crash messages from the standalone and web-based platforms (yes, I retrieved both this time!).

Hope this helps improve this marvelous research tool. One of the best/easy to use bibliography managers I've ever used.

  • If you can reproduce this reliably, we'd actually need to see a Debug ID (different from a Report ID) from startup through the crash, using the "Enable after restart" option.

(Also note that the Firefox version is not "web-based". It runs on your computer just like the Standalone version. The "web-based" version is zotero.org.)
